My Jeep is still \'a shakin\' (need tech help)

I posted a topic a little while ago about my jeep shaking VIOLENTLY when starting from a complete stop. The shifter shakes all over the place. Well, since then I have replaced the clutch, pressure plate, t/o bearing, pilot bearing, and had the flywheel resurfaced....and the problem is still there....

The problem is temperature dependant, if it's warm out, it'll shake violently right from the start... if it's cold out, it sometimes takes 20 miles of driving before the shaking gets really bad.

The driveline is all tight, there is a small klunk sometimes when steering.

The temperature thing makes me believe it has something to do with a fluid (engine oil, gear oil, etc), but all have been replaced and are full...

Could the temperature outside affect the catalytic converter? Would a plugged cat make my shifter dance all over the place?

Any help would be appreciated, I'd rather be Emptying Every Pocket for fun mods, not struggling to keep my Jeep on the road (or off-road for that matter) :)

Based on your description, I'd say it was the clutch as well, but since you covered all those bases it can't be that. I had a '78 Scout II (well, still do, minus the axles /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif) that did the EXACT same thing you describe, and it was the clutch. BTW, NEW pressureplate I hope? I've had chowderheads replace the clutch and bearing but not the pressure plate, kinda defeats the purpose.

Check your tranny and engine mounts. Try to jack on the tranny and engine on different points and see if one is loose or broken. When it warms up, it would soften the mounts and allow them to move more, versus when they're cold and stiff. Other than that I can't imagine what it could be. The cold shouldn't affect the engine in the morning as far as driveability is concerned.

I hope this helps, sucks having a problem and not being able to correct it.

Try replacing your fuel filter. It isn't an expensive part, but can really mess things up if you get a tank of dirty gas. It is also easy to change. Just loosen the hose clamps and swap it out.

Re: My Jeep is still \'a shakin\' (need tech help)

Steve,
I have the same problem. In my case with two different engines and clutches. However, this time it is not so bad. What I do know is that last time the major cause was the bolts securing the bellhouseing to the engine....I was missing 3 out 6 bolts....you can imagine what the bellhousing was doing....

Now, I have just a little bit of shacking...but a lot depends on how I start out...about half the time I can let the clutch out just right and I don't get the shudder. I tried tightening up the anti-wrap bushing on the clutch...it didn't stop the shudder, but it does seem to be less violent. I kinda remember a post describing how the bushings should be...i.e., they are not supposed to be tight. I have not been able to find any info to support or disprove that point. Anyone have time to look under their jeep and tell us?

Lets hope someone can help us out.

Whats an anti-wrap bushing??? I have tried everything else.. It wouldn't hurt to try that too... Does anyone have any info on this...

I'm running out of ideas... and $$ too....

I think the Anti-wrap bushing he is talking about is what I call the torque arm bushing. Just search for my name and you'll find it along with a lot of other dumb-ass questions.

This probably won't help but then again, what do I know.
The problem you are having was the EXACT problem I had on my 240sx.(I know it's not a Jeep, but it is rwd). I replaced the clutch, pressure plate,etc... to no avail. I put the thing up on a lift and ran it at an idle in first then second gear while listening to it from under the rear. I felt the drivers side half shaft or axle(whatever they call it on a Nissan) and it had a little too much play in it. It was making a subtle clunking sound when the wheel was extended some, just like it would be in a left turn. I replaced it and the shaking, clunking, and loose feeling was gone.
Since you seem to be having the same symptoms this may be a good starting point for you.
It also seemed weather dependant as to when it would act up.

Re: My Jeep is still \'a shakin\' (need tech help)

I had this same problem with my 88 wrangler. So I replaced the clutch and pressure plate and everything. When I took it apart I was expecting
to find oil on the clutch, but I didn't, it was completely dry. I put in the new clutch about a year ago, and now the problem is starting to come
back. It is definatly worse when it is warm out or if I have been using the clutch a lot, like stop and go driving in town or something. I am
really frustrated with it and I don't want to do the clutch again. I am plannin on selling the Jeep in about 3 months, and I know whoever buys
it will have a problem with the clutch. Also, one more thing, I was changing my tranny fluid a few weeks ago, and I filled it right up to the top
of the fill hole. Then the next morning I looked under the Jeep and there was a nice little (about 3 in. in diameter) puddle of fresh gear oil
on the garage floor. And this puddle happened to be right under the bellhousing. So I am wondering if gear oil is somehow leaking out of
a seal on my tranny and getting to my clutch? Any ideas?

Re: My Jeep is still \'a shakin\' (need tech help)

Just a quick thought... Since the problem is only really bad when it's warm out or when I've been driving a while, it's seems like it should be a fluid problem (viscous in the cold, thinner in the heat)... Could the clutch master cylinder act up when the clutch fluid gets heated up, and SEEM fine when it's cold out? I've never troubleshooted or replaced one, so I'm not sure how to test it. My clutch pedal has a loud creak to it, but I always thought that was just a linkage under the dash somewhere.

I always thought that the clutch master cylinder was either good or bad.... not anything in-between...

Am I crazy... I think I'm going crazy looking for this problem.. (and broke too)
