I just filled up the tank (as a matter of fact i always keep it filled, or at least try to) and it marks a little below the full mark. can it be faulty? what can i do?

I've always heard that Zuks gas gauges go bad. I always considered myself lucky because my gauge worked perfect. Then one day my gauge did what yours did, I filled up but the gauge showed just below full. As an experiment the next time I filled up I kept squeezing more fuel in. I was determined to make sure it was filled. I had to put the gas in super slow but I put in over a gallon more! In a Zuk that's a lot! The gauge showed full!

So I don't know what changed in the gas tank but something did because I never had to squeeze in an extra gallon before. But it's still like that to this day. I checked all of my vent hoses and everything looks OK.

The one good thing about Sammy gas gauges is when they say empty, it's not empty! Mine seems to have a reserve tank. Below E, there are two little dots. It's about 4-5 liters left between the dots. When it gets to the lower dot, you're out. And in a EFI Sammy, running out of gas too often is VERY bad for the expensive fuel pump.

On the issue of toping of the tank, some sammy's need to be "burped". Mine doesn't. When the handle clicks off for full, I'm hard pressed to squeeze another $.25 in to it.

I always carry a 5-gal. Gerry can of gas, a half a tank to stow!

Hi all just got back from Ft Riley. Nice trails up there, nice big hills and stuff. Sorry didnt get any pix of trailing forgot cam at home. but i took a pic of it right away when i got home.

Any ways, i can really tell my gauge is lying unless
1. really bad Fuel economy (doubt that unless im have engine probs)

2. My sis is getting a hold of it and aint fueling it back up. /wwwthreads_images/icons/mad.gif

Hey zooker, find out if it is the guage or the sender. Pull the connection going to the sender unit (right behind/near the license plate bulbs) and short this to ground. If the guage reads full up, then it is the sender.

All your probelms sound very familiar to me.

My fuel guage would rarely go above 1/2. Sometimes (after filling it to the brim) it would show FULL, but the next time the ignition was turned on, it would only register 1/2 again.

The problem ..... the fuel sender unit was not earthed properly.

To fix it, you need to drop the tank
(4 x bolts, filler neck, breather, fuel supply, fuel return, and the single electrical connection to the sender)

Then remove the screws from the top of the sender .. if they dont want to undo, dont force them, use plenty of penetrating oil, because shearing these off is a real pain.

Take the sender unit out, and away from the tank, and wire brush all the rust off the upper surface and the inside of the screw holes.

Refit the sender unit, but trap a length of electrical wire under one of the screw heads before tightening it down.
Refit the tank.
Finally, connect your new earth wire to one of the existing eart points near the rear light cluster.

Job done ...

(of course it's advisable to test the sender unit works before refitting the tank)

fix it .. bend it .. mend it

It is most likly the sender, as the last poster described,
While you have the sender out Check to make sure its working, most can be fixed by bending the small arm that is under the cover at the top of the sender so it makes contact
all the way throught the movement of the arm. Be gentle with it as it would be real easy to break off.
