I've never had mud get in my starter before. I've heard of this happening alot to others but never paid any attention to it since I've been lucky and not had a problem with my starter related to wheeling. But now I've gotten mud/sand/water in mine and it wouldn't start unless I banged on it with a hammer. Now it takes a few seconds after I turn the key before it will react. What can be done? I have a flywheel cover, bought the starter from NAPA just a few months ago. Is there a way to seal this thing better and can I clean this one so it will last or should I plan on replacing it soon???

I've had this problem many times with mud racing and Jeep'n. I have even tried the mini racing starters. They last longer, but still end up going bad from moisture, and they cost too much. My solution is to buy a stock type starter from a place that has a warranty, and I just keep returning them when they die. Starters are easy enough to change. I also carry a new spare and rotate stock!

I don't think any places here in N.S. have lifetime starters. I did take one back after a few months after i washed it clean and the guy still saw some mud and grumbled. I would take yours apart and give it a thorough washing with a soft brush. This has let my starter work when it would not even budge with mud in it. I put a bit of silicone in the drain hole, not to seal it but to make it a bit smaller and slow down the mud.
