I know... I know... Too many Weber questions....
I have mine set approx where I want. However, how can I tell if the mixture is too lean?

I would appreciate any help ...thanks

I assume you mean the idle mixture. If it is too lean, it just won't idle right. You can check mixture with spark plug readings, but the
proper way is to use new plugs. You can get an overall picture of the way your engine is running by just taking a look at a couple of
the plugs that are in there now. Anything lighter than a light tan and you are too lean, anything darker than a medium brown, too
rich. You really want to do it right it's with a new plug. The way we used to do it when I drag raced motorcycles (yes I'm still around
after running a Kawasaki triple and a 987 Yoshimura engine Z-1) was to put new plugs in, make a pass, shut it down while still wide
open, take a plug reading. Want to check idle, same principle, start it up, let it idle, shut it down, check plugs. Ditto for midrange.
Time consuming, but I don't know of any other way to get it just right. Anyway, enough of that, just make sure you're not running
too lean, engines don't run real well with holes in the top of the pistons.

What about the smell of the exhaust? Is that a reliable indicator?

In my experience smell of the exhaust is only an indicator of a very rich condition, smells like gasoline.
