More Sunday\'s Los Coyotes

Not being a computer type - not sure this'll work.

Andy got his rear wheels in a rut, the front right on a burm - his left front was waving in the breeze. At one point I could have walked under that tire.
Pic doesn't do it justice.

Re: More Sunday\'s Los Coyotes

I get teased alot --- "Rice Burner" etc.
Very little travel - maybe 4" max top to bottom - like a solid frame go-kart.
For a long time I've been extolling the virtues of not flexing too much -- but this is ridiculous - it'll get more soon.

But - this runs flat - doesn't twist up much - hangs one, two, or three wheels in the air sometimes -

Here's the same place Andy was - stays flat - no glory - no fancy - just goes on through -- boring!

Jap Jeepster -

Yup, essentially stock suspension, a little gearing, lots of cutting - did I mention LOTS OF CUTTING?

5.12's - aluminum front diff, 4.39 aluminum T-case, aluminum 5 spd, rear Lock-Rite, front ARB, 35's, full skid plates front to rear, & a cute little 1600 cc (80cu") aluminum motor. 1950 lbs wet, 79" wheelbase. Street legal, licensed, insured, smogged etc.

The short wheelbase lets you choose a line that everyone wishes they could - but helps you backflip on hills. Twice so far I've stood it on it's spare tire - balanced with all 4 wheels off the ground - stuck!

Plans someday - better/longer 3 link rear, dual stage IFS front, and maybe even a steeetchable wheelbase.

Thanks for posting those, Rich. That picture definitely doesn't do it justice. All I could see was sky - and even more sky every time I stepped on the gas.

Great pictures Rich. El Hill was one serious hill - it was pretty funny when those two guys came around the corner and heard that someone made it up - they really wanted to see you going up it Tom! When Andy started to go up - they both jumped out of their Jeeps and thought they were going to see some carnage. From the sounds of it they have been there many times and never seen anyone go up it. LOL Tom does it again.

Thanks again Rich for spotting most of us through the really technical areas.

Funny part is - Tom made it look pretty easy. Just like everything else he encountered all day. SDChris made it up last time I was there, too. But he's running a 350 with tera-low gears.

So now I'm on a mission to get a front locker and some low gears now just to tackle that dang hill.

C'mon guys, who's with me?!?

Re: More Sunday\'s Los Coyotes

Ya know, if you'd tried it a second time I wouldn't have been able to just watch again!
The line I tried didn't work for me, but I wasn't trying all that hard - just playing while everyone came down the previous hill. You proved that wasn't the way. But the line you took, and the lower pressure worked.
Ever since we left I've been regretting at least not trying the way you went. Short wheelbase backflip be damned. I doubt it'd be a problem unless I slid back down - good incentive to make it!
Next time!

For those that have never seen Tom's rig perform, it's awesome. His super low gears, soft suspension that's not too "tippy" high all work together to make it great. He makes everything look so easy.
Heh heh - I guess it's only problem is it doesn't like to be driven in the street - it likes to park at the side of the freeway! Distributor gear, clutch cable etc.

It was a great trip. My friend Ron Flohra - a household word in the 60's drag strips - used to basicly "own" B Gas with his Chevy II called MITY MOUSE - maybe some remember it. This was the first "real" off road run he's been on. His comment: "Neat - The fun lasts longer than 10 seconds."

Re: More Sunday\'s Los Coyotes

Rich, I forgot that I drove the almost 3 hours there with no clutch. My clutch cable broke on my block. Got to Temecula and some of the guys wanted to get something to eat and I went to work on the clutch. Just so happens I had a NOS cable sitting behind my seat for almost 2 years.

Rich, you can just email them to me if you want. clffhnger at aol.com Got to write it correctly though.
