I put a K&N intake, and Gibson exhaust on my 01' 3.0 with good results. Noticeable bump in power and better gas mileage also. Sounded pretty good to, without being too loud. I tried a chip(Jet, I think) but only noticed more high rpm power with that, and no difference in mpg.

Instead of looking for more horsepower, did you think about regearing? Putting the bigger tires on has the same effect as raising the gear ratio which could hurt acceleration performance. Going to a lower gear ratio may bring you back to stock like performance.

im looking for something just to pick up a few hp to help me out for now because eventually id like to just rebuild my motor and put a performance kit in it. Ive thought about going to a 5.0 H.O but the truck i drove with one in it set up identical to mine didnt impress me much at all. And on that note what do you think i should go to for gear? it has 3.56s in it and im running 35s maybe 3.73s or 4.10s? thanks

I can't say for sure what gearing you should run now to regain "stock like" performance since I don't know what size tires you had stock. However, you can figure it our yourself using this formula:

New tire height/stock tire height x stock gearing = new gearing

I think I did that right /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Tire height of course is the overall diameter of the tire. In this case, your new tires are 35 inches in diameter.

hey thanks for that information i figured it out according to your fomula and it showed i should run about a 4.11 gear because i had orriginaly a 30x9.50x15 on my truck and i put 35x12.50x15s on it. but i new have a new problem the gears are going to have to wait.

Remember that Ford geared these things rediculously high from the start. Mine had 235/75R15's and 3.27 gears when new. I got it with the same gears and 31's.

I've got 4.56 gears in it with my 33's and it's a bit over geared now. Going up to true 33's or maybe 34's soon.

If it's a 5 speed manual you want 4.88's or 5.13's to have it drive like it should. If it's an auto I'd stick with the 4.56's to keep the revs down.

They put 3.73's and 4.11's in 4.0L Rangers that come from the factory with 31's.

Regearing makes the truck SO much nicer to drive and "more powerful". You don't actually gain any power, you can just use it better.

Now, are you going to really put a V8 in it? If so, the gear options change. It depends on what transmission you want to use as well, auto/stick/OD/no-OD, etc.

Also, ever been to www.TheRangerStation.com? All the Ranger Based Vehicle info you'll ever need. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

We race a SCORE class 7 ranger powered with a SOHC 4.0

JuanCO are team mechanic and inhouse performance guru is able to to get a tremendous amount of power with built internals (Nearly 330 HP to the wheels)

On another race truck sam power plant stock with a performance cam, SCT computer programmer chip, and an intake system Juan was able to find almost 210 HP to the wheels.

We now have other well known names (Camburg) coming to us for power solutions.
