The military paint is fairly durable but there is one thing that you need to be careful with. If it CARC type paint, it is lead based so be careful using it. Any vehicles that ever needed to be repainted or touched up that had CARC paint had to be sent out to special shops due to the paint. Also it gets very hot in the summertime.

Thanks, this is a ton of info.
Well I want to avoid anything toxic, so carc is out (darn I was going to try to avoid some tickets too!)
I want something flat, like the sand color, maybe a little darker. I'm going to paint my rims the same color with the black accent (like you freak accident), and something I never have to put wax on or polish it. I'm tired of polishing my yj everytime a leaf rubs against it.
So, Gillespie brand sounds like the better brand. Drew, does this have the carc stuff in it?
One thing that i'm really concerned about that somebody mentioned was spilling oil based liquids on it and staining it. I would imagine that touching up the spot would be hard because the oil would probably soak in the paint? I don't know, just quessin.
What about dupont or ppg paint, is this stuff durable and is it cheap?

The camo sheets don't sound bad, kinda expensive, but don't sound bad.

If military and flat paints scratch and stain easily, what would be another alternative for something that is cheap and applies fairly easily?

cheap and applies rather easily..

hmm, my local auto paint wholesale outlet has paint for $29.99 a gal, hardener and reducer makes it $50 per gallon, any color you want.

thats the same paint most older cars/trucks came wearing, and its cheap enough to do it whenever it needs it...

but its glossy, unless you dont buff it out, then its still pretty glossy, but iM sure you could rough it up..

I'm not a paint and body guy, so I'm not up on the paint types...
The other guy is correct, the military vehicles with field grade paint were constantly being touched up...
It was tough paint, but it would hold moisture and crud...
It was hard to get mud off of too. We used fire hoses to clean things, and that wouldn't get the crap off sometimes...

I like black, but a pattern of dark green, Two or three shades of Gray, and some black in tiger stripes made the jeeps invisible in low light or at night, and damned hard to spot in direct sun light...

I don't know how well the radar evasion of the paint is, but I know the police laser couldn't lock on even under a hundred yards...
If you have to run a front license plate, or have a flat windshield, all bets are off there also...

Later folks, Aaron.

Thanks everybody for all the info. I think I will go with something like ozark was talking about. Find some cheap auto paint and spray it on, maybe even some rustolum. The military paint is priced right but has too many variables. If anybody has any particular brand names to ask for at the local parts store let me know. Thanks again ken

the Oreillys chain stores ( similar to Autozone, but better) if you have that chain in your area, they have a pretty BIG paint section, with a brand of paint called "duplicolor"

you want acrylic enamal, it dries fast ( so you can paint it outside, and not have 3 days worth of bugs stuck in it..) its cheap, durable, and glossy..

good luck!
Im learning this too, Id rather paint it myself for $100, even if it looks like ****ola, i can paint it a few times per year for what even a CHEAP paint job would cost, plus I just wanted to learn some body work, panel bumping is challenging but fun

Body filler smells terrible, buts really soothing to use the cheese grater to rough it down..

have fun

When I worked on the gas wells, we slopped on some Penitrol for a base coat and then slopped on some industrial enamel. That stuff stuck to everything. If you got some on your hands, it wouldn't come off with anything. It's what they use to paint power line towers, it lasts forever. There are a limited number of colors, but it's another option. Any paint store that the local gas drillers, etc. use stocks the stuff.
It ain't pretty, but it sure as hell works.

I painted my CJ5 with the military tan paint from surplus city. I got the gallon and have pretty much painted everything and a hard top with it and still have some left. I used a standard disposable paint brush to apply it. My jeep has that nice textured look. It is hard to wash at times, when the mud really gets into the crevices. You will have to use it in small amounts or it really turns into goop when brushing on. I love it. I never cut it with anything. I have to start playing with the body to get rid of rust that is coming out, but I Love the way it looks. I think i might get the military OD green next time. It is time for me to feel military. I included a picture of my jeep.

I was about to ask if you had a pic, and then I seen your attachment. EXCELLANT! Thats exactly how I want mine to look with the exception of painting the wheels either tan or black. How does the paint hold up? Have you noticed if it stains? How resistant is it to brush and tree limbs? (I tread lightly but sometimes stuff gets in your way) What about durability, how often do you figure on repainting it? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to decide on whether to get some or not. thanks ken

The paint seems to hold up just fine. The branches scratch at the paint but it only scratchesa little, but it seems to go away. It washes ok, but the dirt gets into the crevices left by being brushed on. The gallon of paint seems to last forever. I painted it about twice, in about a 1 and a half, but that is pretty much because i fixed some rust and had some touch up left over and then i used it on the rest of the jeep. I have found the dented cans you can get from army surplus so the next major body work will mean i will turn it into an olive drab mean machine. I would highly recommend it. If you are the type that has to have perfect paint then it isn't for you. Your jeep won't become show and shine quality. But hey it is a Jeep and who cares.

Have you ever stained it or anything like that? Is something that I can get two or three years out of? Reason I ask is I have so many mods and ideas that I want to do, I don't know when I would have the time again. This is no shine and show jeep (haha), nothing chrome, just tan an black and everything functional. Unfortunely I have a show and shine wrangler, and thats for the buildup of the 7, too take its place.

I haven't really stained it. The only thing that maybe will cause a stain is the dirt getting into the paint crevices, but a good sponge can remove it. I did notice that the paint faded considerably. I painted a fender after bobbing it and then stepped back and noticed a big difference in the color, but i live in florida and the sun is always out. The paint should last a while, i don't know what type of military paint, ie heavy duty or whatever was discussed int the previous posts. My jeep probably has about 5 coats and it probably will get thinker.I am not a body person ,because when i find a rust spot i sand it, paint it with corrolles rust converter and then paint over it with the military paint. The rust is starting to win now so i have to cut out some pieces and weld in some good metal, but i will probably return to the same habits. Much to the scorn of some people i know. I like my jeep to be able to look nice, but not so nice that I will be afraid to use it. If you have any other questions just ask.

I have been active in the military vehicle collecting scene for quite a while and there are some things to add here. Regarding the staining, several of the collectors will spray their trucks with a light oil to make them look a bit shinier for shows. This has the added effect of soaking into the porous military paint and retarding moisture from rusting things. Also, be very careful when spraying CARC style paint, the fumes are extremely toxic and require the use of special breathing apparatus, most filter style respirators will not provide enough protection.

RE: Found some paint

Getting close to painting now and figured I would do some price checking. Found some mason paint made by Dupont in light buckskin. Its a enamel paint. For a gallon of the paint, gallon of reducer and some hardner I can be out the door for 54.24 with tax. Sounds pretty good. Anybody had any luck with this paint? I've heard dupont has a pretty good reputation. And light buckskin should be pretty close to tan. I'm going tomorrow to look at the color chart. later ken

If it is the IR paint we have on our vehicals here in Canada be very careful. It is very toxic. Use rubber gloves or if you are spraying in use a very good quality resporater. If you brush it on (not to thick) it stays looking good for a while . If you spray it on it looks better and seems not to chip as easily.
