Took the jeep out this weekend and 26 miles into a mountian lake. Most 4x4's can do the first 10 miles, Good 4x4's can do the next 8 miles, and very few go make the last 6 miles. Big mud hole with huge boulders for about 300 yrds stops em every time, from there it is steady rocks and with intermittent mud holes or creeks thrown in for fun. Well I went in had a great time and on the way back out, the guy riding with me said he could hear a whine. I have a noisy idler pulley, so I was not to concerned. Made it to where the good 4x4's go to and the jeep died like from a lack of fuel. When I went to start it, the fuel pump clicked like it should, but no start. I checked my fuel rail, good pressure, more than 3/4 tank of gas, it has a new filter, but the filter is before pump, so if fuel rail has pressure, filter should be OK. Well jeep finally started and no whine. Made it to the to of the pass and the whine came back. Turns out the whine is the electric fuel pump. I didn't realize they sounded like that when they go out. We did make it back to civilization on it, but I am concerned and need some answers.
What makes an electric fuel pump go bad? This one is three years old, but only has 4 or 5 thousand miles.
This is an MPI pump, mounted outside the tank. Does anyone know what a good replacement pump is, or even what make and model the kit pumps is?
I will keep this one as a spare, but I will be very carefull from here on out.
