Want to install the mech. water temp gauge
Where on the 258 would be the best place that I should do this
Would be nice if there was a port for this already

When I bought mine, the PO had put one into a port just below the cab on the manifold. I don't know if it is factory, but mine is there.

Below the intake/exhaust manifold, and in front of the exhaust pipe, you'll see a 3/8" npt plug in the side of the block. That goes into the water jacket. I installed my mechanical gauge in that port.
