man, xj\'s are expensive around here!!

Maybe it's just because it's winter or something, but the xj's in my area are WAY overpriced compared to KBB price!! have been looking for one the last couple weeks, about the only ones I can find are at stealerships, hardly any private owners are selling them. been looking at years 93-95, and the cheapest has been $5400!! Seen a nice 93 this morning, thought it might be around $4000, which I could probably stretch and afford, looked at the windshield, $5900!! Granted it only had 83,000 miles on it, but that is still high I am thinking. No way I could talk them down to my price range. Sorry for the rant, just getting impatient looking for one I can afford....Ben

Don't get discouraged, Ben, they're out there. I paid $4500 for my "new" 96 XJ last January (2003); it had 88k on the clock. I was actually looking at ZJs when I found it. I bought it because it was obviously well maintained and not abused. The PO most likely did take it off road; mostly on the beach, as far as I can tell. It is a base trim (SE) package; the only features that are not base is the 4.0L HO, the auto trans, 4wd (NP 231) and the A/C. I went for a good solid XJ and have learned to live without features I would have gotten if I had bought new. You can't buy a XJ brand new any more, regretfully. Good Luck!!

I felt the same way about the prices around north Texas on XJ's as well. I finally found a '90 2dr selling at a dealership for $2K. I found a few problems with it that were in my scope of being fixable so I was able to talk them down to $1500. I have loved every minute of it. The fact that I did get such a good deal makes it easier for me to make some of the crazy mods that I've been making.

Re: man, xj\'s are expensive around here!!

try carsoup.com ... I was looking last year (my buget was around $4,000) and found quite a few if I was willing to travel 200-300 miles. I had previosly owned a '91 limited 4.0 HO and loved it (47,00 miles when I bought it, 220,000 when I sold it). The auto tranny is great, and great for towing. I never had a problem (16.5 foot boat). The only thing I wished for is better breaks (XJ's have rear drums). I unfortunatly bought a '96 monte to commute to work in and wound up with a money pit. I sold the monte and bought a '98 ZJ limited 4.0 black, and I LOVE it. The same mods that I put into my old '91 are going into the '98, can't wait. ZJ's run a little more money... I paid $9,500 with 70,000 miles and all the bells and wistles. Leather heated seats, power everthing, sunroof...

My '91 never let me down... I beat, rolled it on it's side, towed with it, floated it through a pond, ran logging roads in the woods in a foot of snow, started it in the middle of no-where after sitting all night in -30 below zero. Can't go wrong with a jeep and the 4.0 liter I6.
