say someone wanted to start producing jeep parts.....something specifically jeep...like an aftermarket hard top or a custom bumper or something....

does one need to get some permission or something from DC to make stuff for the jeep brand name or how does that work? anyone??

thanks!!!!

I think if it "Fits" a Jeep you don't need license. If it "Says" Jeep anywhere on it, or you use Jeep in the advertising for the product, as well as Wrangler, CJ series, etc. you need either permission from Chrysler or put the standard "Jeep Disclaimer" in the advertising ("Jeep is a registered trademark or the Daimler Chrysler corporation").

That brings up an interesting point...how come we dont see that disclaimer when the words "Bronco" or Chevrolet" are used?

As long as you do not infringe on DC's patents you're OK.

The problem is that do you know if your do-hickey that you make is possibley covered by one of thier (or anohter's) patents? Heck, often even DC dosen't even know what their own patents cover.... See the Ted Vanzant Story. And yes, if you use a copyrited word then you'd best give credit to the owner in an ad... It helps to cut down on lawsuits.

Now's a good time to hire a patent attorney, not later as lawsuits get real messy and expensive, real quick.
