i'm totally new to 4WD (but i've been working on cars for a long time). i'm looking for a truck i can use if/when i go to grad school on east coast. offroad capability will be ok but not primary intention. i'd like for it to handle snow and have a heater

i'm not afraid to get my hands dirty but reliability is a big plus. it has to be a 5 speed (hate auto), the longer the bed the better. i have about $2000 to spend but until september to finish building it (which is where all the fun is).

i'm looking into toyota first but i'm open to suggestions.

I think you are looking in the right place. I have owned a 90 ranger, an 88 nissan hardbody, an 92 toyota pickup and i know have an 03 tacoma. THe yotas where a better built and allround truck.(the reason i bought a new tacoma!!) thanks for the help! i've seen a few ads for full size ford/chevy/gmc V8s as well. not sure how those stack up reliability wise. or for that matter, what my $2K will get in those brands.

i'm mostly looking to stay stock but have the option of 4WD.
