I am just finishing up my bumper, and I want to put an easy shovel mount. What I am looking for are "rings" that you could press the shovel into and it would snap in and be held by the tension of the ring, and when needed could just pull out. I don't know if that is a good description. Something similar to how it would mount in the garage maybe. My problem is I don't know what they are called, and can not find them. I will check OSH and Home Depot or Lowes and see, put wanted to know if anyone had an idea.

Something like a spring clamp without the handles, and would open by pressing into it.

TIA

I just thought of an example. Something like a pool cue holder (obviously metal and bigger) If you can picture the plastic "clamp" that the top of a pool cue snaps into. That is what I am looking for, for my shovel, and ax.

TIA

if it's what i'm picturing, I'd want something a little more secure that wouldn't "bounce out" on a hard bump. hate to loose a shovel while running down the highway!

I agree. My brother had some small ones that were spring loaded and VERY strong. I would do something extra for freeway travel. I just can't figure what they are called.

Might go with a small quick release band clamp.

Thanks

The last time I checked a shovel was considered a garden tool.......so the metal clampy things you are looking for should be in the garden tool section of most major hardware stores. I worked at an Ace for over a year and I know they've got them and so should any similar retailer. They are commonly used to hang tools on a garage wall........which doesn't move. On a moving vehicle I wouldn't trust them to hold onto the shovel for more than 2 miles.

How about something like vertical PVC pipe attached somewhere on the Jeep where you invert the shovel and slide it in. Maybe some sort of quick release attaching the PVC to the roll bar or something, then the shovel can just be slid in and out.

You could even expose the handle through the bottom of the PVC, drill a hole in it and use something like a Cotter pin to secure it for highway use.

*edit... sorry, just noticed you were looking for ring ideas. Forgive the ADD, lol.

Sounds like you want to make something? not buy it? I purchaced a thing called the SMAX Rack a few years ago. Holds Shovel Maddox Axe, works great but a little pricey! I welded it on the spare tire rack. If your interested I can send a photo or a link to view it.
I tried several times to make something like you describe but it always required a bungee to keep it secure or to stop it from rattling.

How about 2 nylon or leather dog collars bolted through the middle to the bumper. Hold the shovel where you want it and cinch down the collar. Might have to add another hole and trim the extra, but it could work.
Quick, fairly secure, and cheap.

Military Jeeps all had a shovel on the side. Doesn't someone have a picture of the mount?

The early ones did. The M38A1 has it mounted under the hood. The brackets and straps are still available aftermarket. Here's an MB & M38A1 for you.

We use these on most of our Fire Trucks. You can use them to mount just about anything. I like the ones with the rubber pullover...it just holds better and wont rattle around like the pin ones...

Yeah...that company makes all sorts of cool mounting hardware...they even have mounts for Chain Saws and K12's...I built a few brush trucks a while back and loaded them up with mounts from this company...They work like a champ and they are DOT/OSHA approved...
