I am about to take the locking hubs apart to check the bearing in a wide track D30 going into a Jeepster. The problem is after I remove the five bolts that hold the hub and after removing the indicator screw with the unit in 2 wheel drive the locking hub will not come off.

Is it ok to pry it off with a screw driver? Or is there something wrong.

The five bolts should be the only ones to remove.It's just stuck.Gently tap it all the way around and it will come off.Be sure it is turned to 2wd before removing.Sounds like you have the 81-86 model with 2 bolt caliper disc.

Figured it out someone must have taken the hub apart to inspect it (before I bought the axle) and had not put it back together properly. So when I opened it up it came out in pieces.

With the spring out of the locking hubs I was able to figure out how it should go together, then marking the proper position of the parts with nail polish I put it together with the spring inside and now it all works.

The locking hubs on my '70 Jeepster with the 27 and Warn locking hubs has a snap ring on the axel shaft that holds everything on. Pull off the top of the hub that locks it in two or four wheel drive. There should be about six or so allen head bolts holding the cap on . Under there is the axel with the snap ring. Take off the snap ring and the whole thing will slide out. DON'T pry on it until you make sure there is no snap ring to remove. You may get pieces in the differential case that the gears may not like. On thing is to mark how it's already put on with a scratch awl or the splines may not line up correctly again. I did this once then was stuck and couldn't get the hubs locked. Found out what was wrong after I got home.

Mike is correct, it comes off in two parts, the snap ring is holding it in. Make shure you use lots of black RVT to seal the lockout hub back onto the axle hub, or you will be sorry. Also DO NOT PACK THE HUB WITH GREASE!!!! You will be sorry too. Ligtht grease, that is it.

Thanks for your replies. The older style Warn locking hubs that go on the D27 are fairly straight forward. The problem was with the "newer" locking hubs that were on the D30 which I bought from the salvage yard. I learned the hard way (as usual) that I should not take the little screw off that holds the 4x and 2x indicator on the hub. When I took the hub off I was greeted with a little plastic ring that was hard to reinstall correctly in the locking hubs.

I also see that the disk brakes that I have on the D27 (with all of two miles on them) are very different from those on the D30. Different pads and different method of attaching the disc brakes to the axle. The only thing that appears to be the same is the rotor.

If the new axle works out I will soon have a disk brake conversition up for sale in the classified section. I was really looking forward to just bolting everything up with out having to go through installing and bleeding the brakes again.

Being the perfectionist that I am nothing goes on the Jeep that is not derusted primed and re-painted. Over the years I have learned that perfectionists should not own Jeepsters. I have never seen anything rust as fast as unpainted metal on a Jeepster.

Before you go classified, I am interested in the disk brake conversion.
