Locker Questions???

I have several locker questions (and considering a majority of the people on this board use lockers) - I though you all would be able to help me:

-I do not have a "trailer queen" Zuk - It is driven on the street, more than on the trail. Is the handling of the vehicle affected enough to make driving a dangerous and sketchy process? Oversteer? What are (if any) some of the effects that lockers have on the street? I have heard about the clicking and banging......but what else could I expect?

-I live in New England, where during the winter there is a lot of ice and packed snow. Will the locker also affect this kind of driving - and if it will, by how much?

-Would it be overkill for me to install a locker a daily driver? I am currently using Calmini's LSD. I have considered adding a locker to the rear chunk and moving the LSD to the front with Calmini's new axles.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

pug

Hey guy,

A locker in the back has some quirks, especially four our NY on-off gas pedal driving, but it's a learned thing that you can handle. As far as ice and snow, it helps out a lot at the slower (under 35 MPH) speeds, and at hi-way speed to, but it also could cause slidding in certain situations. IMHO, go with a Lock Right in the rear.

Since you have the LSD, throw that up front with Calmini's axles. It will have improved driving over a locker up front, won't be as scary as a locked front on ice/snow, and with the slip, you'll probably never bust a birf and definately neve an axle.

You're on the right track.

i agree. get a lockright. i didn't have any problems with banging on knocking or anything on the street. i noticed it if i got on the gas pretty good around a corner, but otherwise. . . i was very happy with it. i now have a differential filled with aluminum. the limited slip up front would be pretty nice. i don't really notice it on the snow to much. except that the traction is a lot better. but be careful around corners.

I have a Lincon Locker (basically the same as a spool) and you really only notice it on tight corners on the street. It is also fun in the snow, floor the pedal and crank the wheels you spin around in really tight fast circles :) Around corners on pavement your tires will chrp a bit.

I am in New England too. The middle of last winter I pulled my diffs to install lower gears and installed my spare diffs. I drove a month with these diffs and no lockers and I hated it, I was all over the place. I was happy to get my lockers back in. In my opinion, lockers are great in the snow, some people may disagree. I think if you are acustomed to your lockers and drive sanely, you will like them.

Pug, I remember the trepidition I had about lockers in such a short and light vehicle. Go for it. You will not regret it. The clicking and occasional pop are really non issues. You learn to adapt very quickly to any idiosyncrisies. The only time I get the pucker factor up is when I am in a fast turn and have to let off the gas. You will notice it then, but again, you will adapt quickly and easily.

ALL of my other 4x4's had lockers front and back. The scout im building now also has them front and back. My sami as of right now doesnt have one in either end and i hate it. I cant wait till my lockrite gets here.

In fact when i had my Scout II i got out of a few squalin tires tickets by tellin the cop that i had a locker and that i couldnt help that it chirped the tires. If they didnt believe me i flipped open the glovebox and showed him the factory sticker saying "this vehicle equipped with a Locking differential". They would then say, keep it between the lindes and let me go.
