I have a 76' CJ5 with a 258, T-18 Tranny and Quadra Trac transfer case. Can I put manual locking hubs with out making the Quadra trac unit part time. I believe the hubs are the stonger 6 bolt and have not given me any problems. or should I just leave them alone.

The other question is. Can I put a locker (not ARB) up front with the quadra trac and the current hubs without any adverse effects (daily Driver)?

Would it be better to go with a different transfer case and hubs all together.

i dont know much of the quadra trac.. have only had my wagoneer for several months.. but i do know that a different xnsfr case is better.. since the quad is chain driven.. and that is what goes wrong.. you have a t18.. i think a dana 20 would be better.. shouldnt be that much to get.. i am going to run a d20 with my t18 when i get done.. cheepest for me.. no adapter neccessary..
maybe in the future i can afford a adapter for my d300.. i can always hope..
but i would say ditch the quad and go with the lock out hubs.. and a 20... but that is just my thoughts.. im sure others wont agree..

My brother put the 4wd part time adapter on his 76 CJ with the QT. Worked great, though the QT is definitely an inferior t-case. We had to replace the chain once, wasn't too expensive though. His mpg went from 9 to 12 or 13 after we did the conversion.
My question is, Why would you want the QT to remain in 4wd, spinning your front shafts if your hubs aren't engaged?

/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif OOOOO....Kay! Crazy moonguy/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif is going to spill his guts to you about what HE does with Quadra-Tracs! Crazy moonguy/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif sez that you CAN use front hubs and drive around in "emergency" drive, no problem. That would lock up the center differential in the QT case and the front driveline would continue to turn with the rear. This would be a particular advantage if you had slightly different sized tires in the rear, OR....if someone wanted to steal your Jeep, they could pull it on one of those little u-haul front-tire-up carriers by unlocking the hubs. HOWEVER...little moonguy/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif recommends that you forget the front hub idea, and instead make a tire-matching fixture. Take a 2-1/2" by 3 foot long piece of nice trim board, and put a little tin foot on the bottom....sort of a VEE that sits flat on the deck...tucked slightly under the tire with the wood sticking up three feet. Then make a slot in the wood and install an adjustable pecker that you can set to JUST touch the top of each rim. Then SIZE THE TIRES by adjusting the air. Do this after a good run and on perfect, flat concrete.....and DO IT OFTEN!!!! NINETY-PER-CENT of the QTs are grenaded because the tires are hopelessly out of match, and that creams the differential and the bronze cone limited slip clutches. Then when they have the Jeep in the rough, Blewie! The QT grenades itself. They THINK it's weak, but the real cause was 200 trips to the supermarket with mismatched tires/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif

Another thing to consider if you want to change to a Dana 20 is that your rear diff assembly will also have to be changed. The QT output is offset and the Dana 20 output is centered. The plus side to the QT is the lower low-range.

to me, the quadratrac seems like a good all around transfer case. most of the time i run with the front hubs unlocked and the transfer case in emergency drive. when the roads are wet, snowy or just twisty, the full time is nice. with the hubs and transfer case locked, it's just like any other out there. i just replace the chain about every two years/40k miles for about $130 for parts and oil. i've got 180k on it so far with about 25k behind the 360. still all the original bearings. the th400 is another story though. short version is i'm on my fourth torque converter, second flex plate, and second trans. shouldn't have any problems for a while now though.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Ditto on the benefits of the QT transfer case. Unlocking the front hubs and driving in emergency drive saves wear on the QT differential and the spiders. HOWEVER, in snowy, twisty roads, we prefer total unlocksville.....center differential open, and front end pulling. We are even disabling the cone clutchs to get more freedom for the center differential in our Quadra-Trac equipped SNOJEEP. If you run all four, you MUST match those tires./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

i actaully have to disagree.. i had a quadra-junk in my 76.. i went through only 1 chain with the 304, but when i put the 360 in, i had LOTS of problems...
i used the special lube and everything, but every time i would really torque on it, the chain would stretch and slip..i replaced about 4 chains and 2 x-fer cases in two years The tires were the same and always had the same air in them..i sold the jeep after i tore the gear reduction unit off the back of the q-track and replaced it with a blank-off plate..

it's sort of still a cj thingy....
