LOL!!!! I've pulled my share. Heck, the little 4cyl pulled my friends' '70 Jeepster last night. And the thing is like 5000#'s with the new drivetrain he put in to it. Just needs a clutch reservoir and that's why I pulled it for a few miles. Dang, those mini-utes are so much easier to scoop out of the ditches. Does anyone in the south know what a tow strap is??

Wouldn't that make it a Wrangokee?/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

Personally, I like the size and concept of the KJ. I am not a fan of IFS, but can't help looking at what's been kicking butt at the Paris-Dakar Rallye. This is pure off-roading, and the little "station wagons" are all over that race.

I've gone through a Chevy K5, a YJ, and a TJ before getting my first XJ. I consider my XJ to be the best all-around off-road vehicle I've had. I've been through some pretty hairy stuff and learned that there's a lot more to off-roading than rock crawling, where a solid front axel is almost a necessity. I like the KJ, and I look forward to the mods I know will come out in the near future.

Has anyone ollked at a PT Cruiser? The interior is "the exact same" as the Liberty. And the exterior is just a Grand and a Wrangler having sex!

Why yes I am still here "OLD HAND" or is that old man???And yeah Im finding some of the replies less than friendly.Sorry to intrude on your little club!! I really didn't mean that the liberty was a perfect trail vehicle and i certainly recognise that. I do remember when the midsize cherokees and trucks came out and at the time owned a full size 79 J 20 and a full size 82 cherokee and remember thinking what kind of mistake that was at the time.I see some of the cherokees have been modified to the point that they make good trail vehicles although still not very enamored with the p/u's .Only time will tell as far as the durability of the IFS. I'm a big fan of SFA but wasn't offered on the KJ.To each his own.
P.S. I hope your last little dig there about rolling with the punches (tuck and roll ,pussy) was meant tongue in cheek. I gotta sense of humor and can roll with the best of em. Although I do have my limits.

liberatarian,
By no means do I try to bash you. I will not say that the KJ is a bad vehicle until I have a viable reason. I'm guessing the drivetrain is great.

I really hope that off-road.com would get a KJ board going. And not so I could go over to it and bash the liberty, but rather so they do not get turned-off to a great site by some old-school Jeepers who won't let them "in" on the Mid-size board.

And no, the "tuck and roll, pussy" is a line off of the show Titus. I've been saying it since I saw the episode about a year ago. I highly recommend the show.

The Liberty is probably an excellent vehicle. I primarily do not like them because of who built them and why they were built. I do not hate the styling, but I feel that I would have done something different. I bite my lip everytime I hear the ads say "follows classic Jeep heritage styling" because the tallness of the windows is just not the heritage. They used to dare to be different and sacrifice looks for utility. That is no longer the case.

Tuck and roll, pussy.

Thanks for clearing things up Chris. I do watch that show but never caught the tuck and roll part. Guess I'll have to pay closer attention.I checked out this BBS strictly out of curiosity and saw a good number of unfriendly posts regarding liberty and couldn't help but get my $.02 worth in. Maybe in the future there will be a board that has helpful hints for upgrading any shortcomings with my Liberty.Like increasing ground clearance .I liked the look of the photoshop enhanced liberty on another post. Have fun. Keep the rubber side down

All I can say, libertarian, is Welcome!!/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

IMHO, we all have our tastes, likes and dislikes. I'm glad you bought another Jeep vehicle. To be perfectly honest, I prefer my XJ to the Liberty...but it's like ice cream....that's why they make choclate, vanilla and strawberry./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

So why don't you tell us about the Liberty, gas mileage, how it handles off road compared to live axle Jeeps, etc. Also, please fill out your profile.

PS Kent, the Liberty is larger than the XJ...longer wheelbase, wider track, more interior room...better approach and departure angles.

Don't get me wrong, I havent got any problem with the Liberty at all, I just think it should be a new addition to the jeep line as opposed to a replacement. i think it will complement the current line of vehicles nicely. But if DC even thinks of trying to IFS anything else they make, very many people will be very very mad.

Unfortuately, SA, I think manufacturers today have an aversion about keeping almost 20 year old design models around...it isn't like the old days of Willys, Kaiser and AMC...for better or worse, those days are gone forever./wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif

I am not trying to add fuel to a blazing fire:

The army's HumVee is what pretty much replaced the SFA for any vehicle. Granted: IFS and the HumVee design are apples and oranges where the axle meets the wheel; but independent nonetheless.

On the plus side: The Army did an independent study for a viable (pronounced "cheap") and capable offroad vehicle and came up with a modified Dodge Ram 4x4 that outperformed the HumVee in many tests and was a fraction of the cost, with the mods! Unfortunately the study was too late in that it came after the war.

By the by, why do you guys stop at mini-SUV's? Why not pull out the Full Size Suburbans, too? :>)

do i need to post that pick again? :>)

I spent many-a-day repairing broken half shafts while doing my stint at Ft. Polk. The Hummer is a perfect example of why IFS doesn't work. When off-road, there is too much strees at the wheels to have so many connected parts turning the wheels. IFS is for the people who buy off-road vehicles for their looks and never take them off-road.

AJ,

could it be possible that you may stumbled onto something, there? Doesn't Liberty use the same coil suspension as the Grand Cherokee? Do y'all think that a Grand's front axle would fit under a Liberty?

Hey Libertarian. If your serious about wanting a vehichle that is capable off-road, I'll donate a solid Dana 30 front axle to the cause, just as soon as I swap some D44s under the Wrangler. Just keep it in the sand until then- thats the only place without pavement that IFS works.

Hell, the only IFS I do like is Ford's TTB setup. You can just get so much travel out of that! I'd love to build a custom truck with TTB at both ends to race in the desert. However, I live in FL, so I'd have no place local to race it!

Make it up as you go.
