looked at a 95 grand chereke really nice shape , 6 cylinder, automatic. Test drove it and found out that you have to let off the gas in order for it to shift. It didnt seem to slip. has 140 thousand miles on it and its not all wheel drive. Wondering why it is nessicary to let off gas in order to shift?? What could be wrong with the tranny? maybe a vacume line? they are only asking 2900 which seems like a good deal but i dont want to purchase it if it has major tranny problems. thank you for any info.

With 140,000 miles on an automatic, it's probably time for a fluid and filter change. Also may need to change the modulator valve if it's got one (I'm not familiar with Chrysler/Jeep automatics. Just my .02cents. Some of the other folk's on this Board may have some better inputs.

I beleive thats an aisin/warner4 ( AW4) tranny, I had one a long time ago, I dont recall having to let up to shift, it owuldnt shift if you were trying to accelerate though.
if you got easy on the gas it would shift fine, it did always seem to downshift early though, like if you pushed the gas a bit more.

it MIGHT be normal, it might not be.

140K is alot of miles for an automatic 4 speed.
I would have it checked, it could easily be near $2000 to have the tranny fixed.
