My neighbor just rebuilt the 258 in his '81 CJ-7. Runs great, but the rear main seal is now leaking. Is there some special precautions to take when doing this installation? One local mechanic advised him to "shellac" the seal prior to installation. Any ideas on the subject will be greatly appreciated.

the rear mian seals on 258's and amc v-8's all have that 2 piece seal...they suck.. i have had limited success glueing them in place .. one thing to watch though is this.. you said he rebuilt the engine.. if he only replaced the rings, the engine might need to get bored...usually if you can't keep a rear mai in (after a try or 2) it's cause you are getting blow-by..
