Klunk in rear end?

549 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  CJDave
I have a slight "KLUNK", sometimes "KLUNK, KLUNK", sometimes "KLUNK, KLUNK, KLUNK" in my AMC 20 rearend. It only occurs from a dead stop and then only if I jump on the gas hard. Which I don't do often, hence why I didn't discover this noise for over a year. Any suggestions on what it might be? What to check?
thanks,

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif Is there any chance that the splines in the transfer case output are slipping? Test it by shifting to "E" drive and see if it stops./wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif

Check the driveshaft universal joints for slop. Does it do this type of clunk when you first put the tranny in gear.

Are you sure it is in the rearend. A common problem with the 20 is the nut on the end of the axles loosening up, it will cause a clunk.

anyone want to bet against me? my guess is the transfer case chain. how many miles have you driven on your current chain? i get about 40-50000 miles before mine starts jumping.

I don't think it is the chain. It was replace about 2yrs/10,000 miles ago. But I could be wrong.
thanks
