K&N filters any good?

I have a K&N filter fitted to my Defender 300tdi. The filter is a direct replacement for the LR paper filter. I must say I bought the filter (in the UK) because the local filter manufacturers had not yet started to make them, resulting in the only supplier being LR dealers who wanted a bloody fortune for the things. The K&N cost only a little more than what they wanted for a filter I should change every 20000kms. Since then I have fitted a Mantec snorkel - the one with the cyclonic cleaner on top.

My question is: should I keep to the K&N in dusty conditions or go back to a paper one? (I can now get 'local' paper filters much cheaper than LR). Or should I use the K&N for normal use and switch filters when heading for the bush? Or any combination of these...

I must say that the Mantec snorkel seems to keep lots of dust out before it gets anywhere near the filter anyway.

For dusty conditions I would stay away from the K&N filter because they are more pourous and will let more dust thru which would be bad for your motor.

Take care of the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.

Whoa, wait a minute Steelerfan. The K&N when oiled with the filter oil will catch dust BETTER than any paper filter. I've been using K&Ns on everything I own since 1974, there is no better filter in the world. Just follow the directions for cleaning and oiling, and only use K&N oil and cleaner. BTW, I live in the dusty southwest, would not use anything else. One other plus, the K&N, when caked with dirt, will still breath better than a paper filter.

CJ I don't agree the larger more pourous element although treated with oil has larger openings to let more air thru but at the same time more of what ever is in the air, that goes thru with out touching the oiled surface.
By the way this would be a great topic to take over to the Short wheel base site for debate.
