just put on the 4\" and 34\'s.....

i just got done with the 4" skyjacker and 34x9.50 TSLs on my 65 CJ5. lets just say its a little "stiff". i got the 34's mounted to 15x7 rockcrawlers for that "extra skinny" look. anyway, i need to get out the tape measure and align it so the tires both face the same direction and i will be ready make cross country trips in it(yeah right). i hope it loosens up a bit. i lowered the pressure in the tires down to about 25(they were at 40). i didnt drive it after the delfation but i assume it will help. any advice on the psi to run on the street? i think 20-30 would be good but i wasnt sure. anyway, any questions, comments, or advice would be much welcomed and appreciated. thanks!

Re: just put on the 4\" and 34\'s.....

I run 20 front- 17 rear most of the time. when I take it on the 8 hour trek to Virginia I will bump it up to around 30. I have run these psi for 2 years without any overheating or any other type of problems. Get used to the flat spots as they only go away when the tires are run long enough to heat up.

The only way to get those springs to be a little more forgiving, i.e. less stiff, is to go out and wheel it hard for a year or so. In other words, the springs will break in after a time and ride more comfortably, but brand new 4" springs are notoriously stiff when new. Just hang in there and they will get better.

thanks a lot for the advice guys. i guess i should drop the pressure down just a bit and hang in there for the ride to soften up. thanks again!

I just assume the tires hold zero load with zero psi and the max load on the tire at the max pressure on the tire and linearly interpolate what the pressure needs to be with half the weight that is on that axle. (That is, if you know how much your vehicle weighs and how much is on each axle.)

I can't specify an exact #, but the folks I've talked to at Interco say that almost everyone who complains to them about rapid tire wear is running way too LOW of tire pressure. Most are looking for more comfort, but are building too much heat for highway driving. The slower you go, the lower you can go though.

i did the tape measure alignment and it improved the way it drove ten fold. of course the stiffness is still there but at least it doesnt want to walk all over the road. the tires being at 25 helped a bit also; i will have to play around with the pressures to see what i like. anyway, thanks for the input!

You got to post some pics of the tires and lift. I want to see what it looks like with the 34's on. And since we pretty much have the same jeep, It will show me what mine will look like. /wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif
