ok, here are the numbers as follows
before oil after adding oil
Cylinder---PSI Cylinder---PSI
1--118| |1--122
2--125| |2--130
3--108| |3--116
4--130| |4--135
5--135| |5--150
6--120| |6--125
7--135| |7--145
8--118| |8--125

On each check, the compression started out somewhat lower on the first compression stroke, then after 3 more (which the haynes manual says to do 4), the compression got a little higher and leveled off at what you see above.

Any help would be appreciated. Haynes manual says the compression should be at 150psi and no greater differences between cylinders of 20psi. Thanks

Why are you doing a compression check? When you ask a question like this it really helps if you give details. I mean, low power, misses?? Often times you can do something relatively harmless (or so it seems) like adding larger tires and now you have slower acceleration (which is normal)so details, details, details. It helps all of us to help you :) Also, I've seen engines with lower numbers still run O.K. usually a some smoking but, running o.k.

ok, I did the comp check cause I seem to be losing power. I'm running a 350cid with 35's and 3.73 gears. I know this will cause the motor to drag anyways, but I've always had the tires/gears so its not like I am noticing this just after putting them on. My truck really bogs down on long grades, and just seems to lack power recently. It doesnt smoke, and it runs fairly smooth. I do know that my timing chain is stretched, I noticed that when I did the timing cover gasket and front main seal. So as far as those numbers go, can I get by with a new timing chain, and maybe a new cam? thanks for the help

Hey!.....Sorry for not getting back to you earlier,Work(UGH!) hahaha. Yes, do the chain. The Cam change can be just what the doctor ordered, this allows YOU to put your powerband where you want it. Check with a cam help line like CompCams to decide which would be the best profile. Also, if you don't do it start to pay attention to where your tach is, relative to your mph etc. This can help you to determine things like subtle slipping of your trans. Are your secondaries working properly on your carb? See, there are so many variables. Good Luck!!

Can I change the cam without having to change the cam bearings, and if not, can I change the cam bearing while the engine is still in the truck? Need a little advice on that one. I will be installing an Edelbrock Performer intake and Carb this week, New Accel Dist, and either Timing chain or gear set. I just dont know bout the cam yet. What are your opinions? thanks man

Comp's 1-800 line was a big help to me, you can get the number off their website. They suggested one of the xtreme 4x4 cam's for my 283 and it was just what the doctor ordered. Much more bottom end and better mpg's. Give 'em a call.
