How about an electric motor with a pulley on the arbor and then a belt to the compressor pulley with both mounted on a frame of some sort? Add a pressure switch to engage both the electric motor and engage the clutch.

 

ive got a 9 " stroke york rigged with a .25 hp elec motor for grins and giggles..

try something other than a starter motor, Maybe a car fan blower motor and gear reduction thru pulleys

the starter is overkill torque and amp draw, and wont last long as a continous use type deal..

but if i run dual optimas and there isn't much load on the starter motor, i think it would last for a bit...oh well.. i have my york mounted to the engine like everyone else, but i thought it would be cool

Guy I bought my house from had a York (though I didn't know what it was then) as his shop air compressor driven by a 110VAC motor. I've been thinking along the same lines (for the Jeep, not the shop), but not a starter motor..... starters aren't built for continuous duty; besides, the required adapters would probably cost more to make than a suitable DC motor.

OTOH if anybody knows of a suitable motor available cheap, I'd be interested in hearing about it, can't figure out where to put a York on my 79 CJ5.....

My dad gave me his old Mongomery Wards air compressor when he got his stand up monster. Its your standard 25 gallon model and it's older then I am. My dad says he screwed it up last time he rebuilt it and it's starting to sound unhappy. So when it dies I got me an idea. I plan on getting a small gas engine and a york and set them up on the old tank. I could throw this in the bed of my taco with the 4xQue (Posting pictures soon /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif) when I go to larger events. I could set it out and hoard my onboard air for me and my buddies. Just a thought.
