You're best bet is to start out with a team that you are happy with. If you know of any racing teams that need help, ask them to let you contribute. Unfortunately, most of that is for free!
A lot of the teams out there which aren't fully sponsored are folks who run their team out of their garages. They do the work themselves or have someone they know do it for them.
This is, IMO, the best way to get your foot in the door.
