Jeeps have drivers?

/wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif I was noticing on the thread that began with "Gun Cleaning" that a remark was made which needlessly impugned a Jeep owner's status as a genuine member of the non-yuppie off-road Jeep community. I KNOW,....it's tough to NOT want to run somebody down when you think they are being a smart guy, or like I do sometimes when I think I smell a (shudder) K-l-i-n-t-o-n-o-i-d L-i-b-e-r-a-l. Running someone down, however, on the basis of his equipment, is a risky venture because you can't always know the facts. Jeepchick and I ALMOST bought her a new YJ in '96, and had we done so, by now it would have been a WORTHY JEEP, with a 242 case and just the right mods. We would have felt VERY hurt if someone had mistakenly assumed we were yuppies. After all, anyone can forsake the Klintunoid democrap party on a moments notice and vote for freedom and morality in November. It's a lot harder to swap your Jeep for something different, especially if it's paid for./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Jeez Dave, I've been driving an 88 Cherokee for a few years now and no one has mis-took me for a yuppie either. Can't be from the lack of paint, the permanantly mud encrusted aluminum wheels, the rear end forever loaded with axles, trannies, sacks of grain, hunting and fishing gear, ect...must be the NRA sticker in the window! :)

A Yj isn't a jeep until its been modified... Personally I call 'em Chryslers... Almost got into a fight one time by calling 'em that.. oh well...

NO, you typed that just a lil bit wrong, A JEEP isn't a jeep, until it's been modified.
Doesn't matter if it's a CJ,YJ, TJ, XJ, ZJ, or even a flat fender.
Ok, maybe not the flat fender, but everyone else.
And on top of that, you have to get it dirty too, otherwise, it's a Car, w/ horrible aerodynamics
BJ

to hell with it, lets go wheelin'
I dont know exactly why everyone bashes YJs so much. Have you ever seen a YJ with no sway bars and trac bars articulate? Mine maxes out the shocks and brakelines, and I haven't even loosened the spring clamps! I've got some 4" extended brake lines to put on, then I'll pull off the shocks and loosen the clamps and show you a YJ with a stock suspension twisting it up!

I am the proud owner of a YJ. It looks like it fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. The front end is trashed, no radio, no top, and to top it all off...its a beatufiul shade of camoulfage! Its survived a two year backyard storage, a rearend collision with a semi, an engine fire and last but not least, me driving it! If anyone tries to tell me the YJ is a soft jeep I usually just rear-end 'em. It won't hurt me, my hood already looks like its been stored on a driving range. (if anyone takes this as a serious flame, relax, they're all jeeps )

MudFlap 87 YJ POS!!
It was somebody bashing people he didn't know.
If he had been following the posts, he would have known the guy had made several mods, and was collecting info on others.

When I said something about his name calling, He called me a 'bullet sponge'...
I figured out a few things pretty quick,
1. He doesn't spend much time here if he wants to start calling me names...
2. He is much to ready to start insulting people trying to help him.

I didn't pay him any mind. He just wasn't worth my time.
There are people here that actually need help, and won't call you names when you try to help...

He strikes me as another one of the stink pot stirring boys, so his intention is to get someone to argue with him...
Just like one of the other less than helpful boys said the other day... He is a pissant until he can get someone to argue with him... (His own words)

Maybe he'll grow out of it someday, but it's not my job to make him grow up...
I don't have any children, and I have a hard enough job teaching employees with an I.Q. how to do something constructive...
I just ignore him.

Later All,
Aaron.

OK, this is going to give a lot of you guys possibility to flame me but here goes anyway: I drive a YJ which has been modefied but now I am going from 4years of winter in Scotland to four years of summer in the Middle East. I can't take BlueJay with because it is RHD and they have a problem with that there, now it looks like the family will expand in the next year as well, so with the temperatures in mind a Grand Cherokee (V8) is probably going to be my choice, it is a Jeep after all!!! I am european so my political beliefs are much more moderated then most on this board but I always feel that what you beleive is your business, it will take too much to change your mind, I rather pick it for Jeep knowledge. Does all this make a "liberal" yuppie? Probably, but this board is first about jeeps and losta later about my (or any one elses) believes, politcal or other wise. The biggest disappointment will be that from the ME I probably won't be able to join in here anymore /wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif!

Keep om Jeeping!
Will the GC be upgraded?? Very likely!!!!

SOA YJ,
Quite the contrary, Jeeps are Jeeps the minute somebody buys one and uses it as the multipurpose vehicle they were designed to be. I think that most Jeeps have several lives. It starts out in its stock form and it gets well used and then either the original owner modifies it or he sells it to somebody else who does, and so on, hopefully forever.

I happen to be very happy with my stock Jeep Cherokee XJ; it fills the role very well just as it is. It has actually become a member of my family. If you wish to modify yours to make it better at one particular facet of this hobby then go to it, more power to you. Just remember all of them, from flatfender, CJ, DJ, YJ, wagons and pickups all started life as stock vehicles and all of them JEEPS. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Jeeps are jeeps, and I drive a '95 YJ Sahara and i will be the first to admit that it might be the yuppiest of the open top jeeps... HOWEVER, over 2 years it has gained many scratches, rollover dents, a top that never stays on over 60 mph, winch, 33's, just got dana 44 front and fullsize model 20 rear. I have to say that a jeep is a jeep as long as it is used for its intended purpose OFFROAD!!! I will admit that everytime i see the pictures of me standing next to my brand new used jeep in stock form I am astouded that it was driven in that condition...I guess I was bitten by the bug, and i am loving every minute of it. Keep wheeling your cherokees or cj's or tj's or yj's in stock or modified form, I will see you out there and you won't hear me complain... unless of course you can make it through something that i can't. hehe. Not all YJ's are Chryslers! I have one of the '87's and it's life was begun as an AMC. Now, mine's mostly GM. Chrysler didn't buy Jeep until some time after the YJ was in production. I think it was some time around '88. So in a lot of cases you're right, but there are a few AMC YJ's. And even the Chrysler YJ's are built on the AMC design.

Call it what you want, though. I think it's funny that some say it isn't a real Jeep until you take most of the Jeep parts out and replace them with Ford and/or GM or whatever. Then it's a "real" Jeep.

I used to be biased agains anything but Cjs and flatties, until I owned a FSJ, then I eventually came to like the TJ, and lastly the YJ has grown on me.

what I cant stand now is folks who throw $30K at a jeep ( like a CJ), and then cruise it like they built it, but when asked anything about it can only refer you to the shop that built it..

that just takes ALL of the fun out of it!

I want to buy a welder, to work on my JEEP
I bought a compressor, and a slew of air tools, to work on my Jeep
Im going to try my hand at body work, ON the Jeep

I want it to be Me. Mine. My ideas, and the ideas of others ive taken and molded to meet my Jeep need criteria.

I cant imagine owning a Jeep and never wrenching on it, or reaseaching suspensions, engines, and trannys...I think thats what its all about.

ok too many Tuesday beers..

I have a Brother in Law that lives in Ore. he has a 72 CJ5 with a corvette 350,beautifull interior and one of the nicest paint jobs Ive ever seen on a Jeep.It really is a fine Jeep, But for years I have tried, with no luck, to get him to come down and break some parts on good old Calif. rocks. Well I finally had to go up to Or.,so as he put it, He could get me stuck in some good ol Or Mud. Well the first day out I could have done the runs in my Dads Buick, and when I mentioned I wanted to air down to smooth out the ride,he looked at me kinda glassy eyed and said the nearest place to refill was miles away. The next day he found a nice steep muddy hill reved up his 350 and slung mud as far as he could make it up the hill, then he exclaimed " Now thats what V8s and CJs are made of". After I easily climbed through his high rut marks, and then up to the top, with my YJs 35s and stock 6 cylinder,I came back down and explained,"NO, thats what Lockers are made for". As a consolation I left him a Quick Air compressor that I had,(he was getting used to that air down trick),and explained ARTICULATION to him. It seemed like enough to keep him busy for a while. Im not saying that Wranglers are any better or worse than CJs,Ive seen em both built to the point that the only stock part left is the SN# Tag. Its how you build em, and deffinitely how you drive em.
