Jeep OR Joop ?????

Ok , so it`s not the most important subject but my friends and I were at a 4x4 show a couple weeks ago and LOTS of Jeeps there . They DOMINATED the RTI ramps . (hehe) An old rusty CJ7 with a tricked suspension kicked all the TJ`s and the YJ`s( with coil conversions) a$$es . I see the choice suspension that day was 2(FLAT) leafs and SOA . Pretty flexy .
Now as most of the Jeeps were rolling by a lot of them had the decals off the Jeep stamping and my buddy says "Joop"?
And I said , yep they all say JOOP but the decals have
the E . Then today I notice on my CJ the stamping is an actual E and not a circle. So is this old news and I`m the only one who didnt know this ? When did they go from JEEP to JOOP ? Transition from CJ to YJ( Wrangler)??? Just curious , thats all . Thanks !!

i've read in a mag that the actual stamps used at the factory wore out and that is why the went from jeep to joop. i have an 80 model and it is jeep. anyway that is what i read.

To show solidarity among owners of the various models of Jeep vehicles, I'm going to let my Short Wheelbase buddies on a secret. The nose mounted "JEEP" decal from XJs, MJs (Commanches) and ZJs will fit perfectly over your CJ "Joop" spaces./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Now, just don't go taking them off of running XJs, MJs or ZJs. Go to the junk yard. /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

I think they do say "Jeep". They look like "Joop" because the stamps are worn out but still in use. The "e" starts to look like an "o" when it is worn out.
Just my opinion. And, you know what they say.

My CJ is not a Joop , it is JEEP . My buddy`s 92 YJ says Joop . I have a feeling they just got cheap when they ordered a new die . Here is a pic of one of the dies ( from the Willys site )it doesn`t look worn it just looks like 2 - O`s .

JEEP became JOOP in the early 80's seams there were issues with "old" tooling used to stamp out the body panels started wearing out the E became an O and they never changed, or this is how I seem to remember what I read in one of the Jeep history write ups. OH yeh!! My 87 says JOOP behind the JEEP stickers

I have an '86 CJ7 "joop"

I don't believe the one about the dies wearing out, the reason being that my joop is crisp and cleanly pressed into the metal. IF the dies wore out, then they replaced them with new ones. One theory I have heard, and it seems to make sense, is that they went to the joop because it was easier to put decals on joop than jeep.

The magazine bits I've seen say the joop started in '86, but I've seen them on jeeps claiming to be '85s... and now this has been verified. I've not seen them on any jeep older than '85 though.

My 85 was a JOOP untill I put XJ emblems off the header panel on it. Yes they do fit, mine have stood the test of the trees for now too./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

had an 84.. said joop.. and i have done this research before.. and this is why i think the stamp wore out.. atleast on the cj tubs.. i have seen other 84's that say jeep.. but mine was joop.. and had orginal paint on her.. i have never seen an 85 with jeep.. so it was probably late 84..

My conclusions /wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif . The stamp didn`t wear out and was replaced when the 85 models were being assembled(prepared) . Sounds like a fair assumption folks ?? Ahhhh ..... now I can sleep again /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif . Thanks EVERYONE for all the info and stuff , its kinda neat knowing when it changed over .
