ythis weekend me and jeepgod were looking at all the incredible rigs and the dozen or so scramblers there.. then.. somethying hit me.. the scrambler tubs were stamped..but some were jeep..some joop.. some...inbetween...thats right.. some only had the faint e.. i now believe that in 82 or 83, they were stamping jeep.. then they stamped out a ton of cj-8 tubs and wore out the die..then stamped out some more...joops.... thats my theory.. and i like it...

Thats one of the most thourough field investigations on the topic to Date. Ill try to confirm your theory with some West Coast observations at the Hammers this weekend.

The only reason that elusive was looking around is because his TJ-7 was broken/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif. Just kidding. His jeep actually ran real good and hung with some of the big dogs. I think that jeepgod and elusive have realized that, although they have built their jeeps, they are in the middle of the pack. As for me, I'm still coming off the assembly line. Totally stock except for the "custom" front bumper (I took off the plastic thingies)/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

I may not like what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

yep .. was thinking my jeep was some pretty mean sob.. until i went to see how it was really done.. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif but as infantryYJ said.. elusive's jeep wasnt the biggest.. nor the baddest.. but it went every where the biggest of the big boys went.. and im sure he surprised many a jeeper out there with that.. he even hung with a sniper.. granted he wasnt cruising 40mph over the rocks like it seemed to be doing.. /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif.. but he went over the same rocks..
now.. where can i find some 2 1/2 ton axles at.. and with that.. ill take a big block.. and some 44" tires to boot.. /wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif
now im playin.. /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

Playing? See the thread about the CJ-7 on Ebay, it's setup like you described, only $12,000. See, and you don't even have to work on it!

Whatever the history, it's "Joop" now, intentionally. The attached jpeg is a rendering directly from the Chrysler CAD data.

I suspect that in the old days they stamped "Jeep" in and left it at that. Later, with modern plastic stickers, they went to "Joop" as a better base for a sticker.

I can add that the 'Jeep' stamping on my 1983 CJ-7 has a well defined 'e's that go all the way to the bottom BUT on one side there is a slightly noticable die flaw in the edge of one of the holes of the 'e'. It is obvious to me that the male die's edge was broken to a small degree when it was stamped ....

/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif My moonguys are rolling all over the shop floor after reading this and because of that I can't get them to work any more today, so here is MY pea-pot answer to this mystery. HAVING BEEN in industry, and HAVING BEEN THERE when the subject of replacement dies came up, I can tell you that the "new" die that looks like "Joop" was a die made (or possibly repaired)by the LOW BIDDER. By leaving out the detail the die is a STRONGER SHAPE and easier to make and repair, and easier to heat treat and easier to use and less finicky and less apt to be hurt by really careless press operators. Now the older factory guys probably fought like hell for the "Jeep" die shape as a genuine replacement, but as always, the bean-counter won out, and some young methods engineer in the factoreeeee made brownie pints with the boss by saving ten bucks on a die and producing crap every time it came down on a sheet from that day forward. It never changes, folks; I just wish that cartoon "Out Our Way" was still in the paper. That depicted life in a factory or a big machine shop as well as anything i have ever seen./wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif Well, I'm gonna try tossing some beer at these moonguys and see if that will get them cranked up and working./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif Dave, wasn't it Alan Shepard who said he comforted himself while waiting to blast off in that Mercury Rocket by thinking it was built by the lowest bidder on a government contract??/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

Come to think of it, the Jeep was built with a low bidder government contract !!/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

xjy, are you thinking of the movie Armageddon where they are getting ready to blast off and Steve Buschmi says that line. It may be based on a true statement but I'm not into NASA history.

I may not like what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

I did not see that movie, Infantry YJ, but that line is accrediated to Shepard in the book and movie "The Right Stuff"./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Gosh darn Elusive , you got the old JEEP/JOOP thing started again . And you say you have it all solved ? I think I started a post back a month ago asking about this and I find it great that people still want to know . Well .... I am going to quit my job on Tuesday morning and my main goal in life will be to hunt down all the people who had anything at all to do with building , designing ,testing of/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif late model Jeeps . Talk to them all and get the true facts on the infamous JEEP/JOOP story /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif. As I believe it to be true , the world will not rest until the TRUTH is know to all of us .I see it now guys , me in my 40 ft RV in the outback at a secret meeting with all ( the living) contributers to the JEEP project , hearing tales of the days the night shift guys put "crap" in the JEEP stamps and at the end of the shift took them out . All the guys laughing that they make 26 JOOPS today .The End /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Well, after following this thread for a little bit, I thought I'd fuel the fire with something I haven't seen come up yet. I have a '76 CJ-7, and it has absolutely NO stamping in any way, shape, or form (except on the rear tailgate). Anyone else heard or seen this? The way I see it, all this talk about the dies wearing out or something, the engineers must have ordered some new dies, but the shipping service didn't deliver them on time ( I know, never happens like that in real life /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif). Therefore, a couple of Jeeps made it out of the factory without being stamped. What do you think??/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Or, maybe I just got ripped off, I mean no stamping, and no stickers...just my luck!!

Unless you have owned your Jeep since new and you know for sure , someone probably put an aftermarket metal tub on your chassis. They are NOT stamped . My .02
