It\'s not easy being green

Hey guys I've been watching this board for a while now, and have decided to jump in.
My dad had a 68 Jeepster in 73. He took my family offroading here in Colorado quite a bit in the early 70s. I remember the back seat of that rig like it was the back of my hand. So I have always had a soft spot for the Commandos. Recently I decided to get a C-101 of my own. So I bought a 71 Jeepster last week. And much to my dismay I paid way too much for it.:( So now I'm looking at a engine rebuild, floorboard repair, brakes, and a possible trany overhaul. I know, I know, "Welcome to Jeeps".
So instead of feeling sorry for myself, I'm going to fix her. And you guys are going to help me.;) (If you want to)

So here it goes.

What are the pluses and minuses of using the original V6 vs. a newer even fire V6?
I like the idea of keeping the motor stock but I am a bit disappointed with the motor's power. (It's bad if an old vw bug can give you a run for your money) This may be due to the fact the motor smokes real bad right when I start it. (possibly valve guides?) any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: It\'s not easy being green

The odd fire V6 isn't really known for lots of performance stock. But with a little help it can be a real stormer.
It still holds 2 class land speed records. I've heard in it's day it was used at the Brickyard, Indy 500, so it can't be all that bad.

Does it only smoke when it initiallty starts? Or does it smoke all the time.
Valve seals may be all it needs, they are 30 years old, a little tired by now,

Keep her original, the 225 is sweet. If you ever get a chance to see me in Denver one day I will show you how to give a Dodge Ram a run for it's money, no joke. (up to 65 MPH) As for voltswagons I hate the things, always sratching the underside up my front bumper. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Glad you are deciding to give a Jeepster a new chance at life, use the search feature on the forum to find 99% of your questions already asked and awnsered before sometime. If you don't find it is a shure thing that someone here knows an answer or can BS a decent one for you. See ya around, good luck on the new money hole...uh, uh, I mean project!!

Welcome to the world of Jeepsters !!!!!
Yeah I'd say stay with the 225. It just depends on what you want to do, and how much you want to spend. I would rebuild the
225 and use quality parts to build it, and you ll have yourself an engine that will last for a long long time.

If you see this put your .02cents in.......................Thanks

Thanks Guys!!

I think I'll keep the 225.

But I'll get back to you on what I can't get out from the Search Function of this board.
Off hand I'll be needing a part here and there so this will be the first place I look.

Thanks again.

Re: It\'s not easy being green

Now to stir the pot a bit. I'd reccomend going to the dark side and putting in a '79 or newer 231 even-fire Buick V-6. You could get a complete rebuilt engine from GM or an engine exchange shop and not have the hassles of rebuilding, (I've had many engines rebuilt and will probably have more done before I go, but there's always hassles). It might even be cheaper than rebuilding the 225 as 231 parts are more redily available and less expensive. Best bang for your buck is a '79 or newer 231/3.8L. It won't be stock anymore, but it will give a noticeable improvement over a stock 225. Some performance parts are available for the 225, but aren't cheap.

If you go that route, don't you have to swap the flywheel?
