isuzu p\'up V8 engine swap

Anybody here have any info on swapping a v-8 into an isuzu truck?...any info would be great or any machine drawings for motor/transmission mounts. the truck is an 86 and is ready for a new power source....any help is great....thanks

I might be able to help you out a little because the Isuzu pup and the S-10 Chevy are basicly the same truck. First thing I want to tell you about is that there is a publication that specificly deals with putting a small block Chevy motor in a S-10 pick up. I've seen it but don't own one. If you search enough sites you'll probably be able to find one, if not PM me and I'll ask my son for some specifics on who publishes it and who wrote it. Because I know he used to have one, but I am not sure if he still does. Also check out these links there to S-10 sites and maybe some one there can help you out.

I have driven a couple differant S10's with 350's in them one a four wheel drive and one a two wheel drive.
The 4x4 was very prone to breakage because it used most of the original S-10 4x4 parts, but if you drove it sensably(spelling) it was a nice truck to drive.
Thwe two wheel drive one was built for high performance and was a beast, very fast. Hope this helps you out a little.

I might be able to help you out on this one.I am currently workin on the finishing touches to putting a 350 in a 87 Trooper.Since your truck probably has the same [email protected]!t engine the installs would probably be the same.I really dont advise a v8.The problem is the space front to back in the engine compartment.My distributer is right against the fire wall and the fan is a 1/4 inch away from the Griffin radiator, and thats after I pounded the fire wall w/a BFH and took a sawzall to the front clip to move the radiator forward.I used a 700r4 and NP231 out of an s10 for the tranny.I had it goin for about three days before I twisted the pinion gear off in the rear.So after a great search a figured out that Wagoneers had the same width axels and were 6 lug to boot so I could use same wheels.Thats been the ongoin project, retro fitting spring over axel in rear and straight axel in front out of the Wagoneer.The 350 in there is really somethin to see but I think it would be easier to use a 4.3 V6 instead because its shorter,if I had it to do over I would go that route.Also plan on changin out the axel or axels if its a 4x4, because the Izuzu axels are junk.If you want any more info let me know I love to talk about it.Have fun.

hi there dude, thankz for the reply...actually i do not figure on a lotta fitment problems on my swap (well none so far) cause im am now gonna use a 5.8 (351c) ford engine i found here locally at a auction for x cop cars....it has all the electronics with it and its a front distributor which outs the firewall problem.....i measured it up and trial fitted it in as a complete motor and it looks ok but that was without the motor mounts on the frame...with those installed it is gonna add another 2 1/2 inches of height in the engine bay (prolly have to find a scoop somewhere or cut for a breather some kinda way).
you were totally correct on the stock zuzu axles being junk so any help there will be great also any help with advice on a new radiator and where/how to mount it..like i said before i really thank you guys for helpin out with your advice...and all the guys here locally have been a great help as well......the wiz

Your gonna be in for a long install.Ive been wokin on mine for about three years now,mainly cause I get discouraged and let it sit for awhile.Im pretty close now.As far as the axels, thats what Ive been workin on here recently.After snappin the rear I decide to redo the whole suspention.After a long junk yard search I found out that early 80 model Wagoneers had the same exact width axels and were six lug ta boot.The ones I used are a dana 44 for the front and a AMC20 in the rear.I went ahead and put the rear one under the springs for lift.The Jeep dana was a spring under but instead ot switch in it I just tried to mount it so that it came out level w/th rear.All of the braketry for the motor mounts,tranny,and axel mounts I just made it up as I went and fabricated as needed.You will still need aBFH for the fire wall to clear the bellhousing on the tranny.I accually got my engine in far enough down that I can shut the hood no problem w/the air cleaner.You will still have major issues w/ the radiator cleance to.There justisnt enough room front to back w/the V8.I have to pull the radiator to change a belt,not good.I am also finding it diffacult to find a place for teh tranny cooler.There is no room in front of the radiator at all.I think my overall lift after the axels are in is around 7ins.I wish I had some pics for ya,maby I could use my dads dig.cam and send ya some.The engine really wont firt at all w/the Ifs front axel,it hits the oil pan.I did get it in but only after adjusting the pan w/the same ole BFH.I am also havin a hard time w/the pass side ex. manifold because of the starter and the engine mounts-very little space.The drivers side is fine.I really dont know how any of this would be w/ a 351, it may be completely different.One thing that will help your install a bunch is a body lift.I didnt think about it until I was doin the axels.It would make the clearences way easier.Well I'm ramblin on again,I just cant write down all of the things that I've modified on this Trooper.Well I gotta go,let me know if you got any more Qs.

Advanced adapters makes what you need. you will need a modified oil pan if it is 4WD and the core support needs to be cut so the radiator can be moved forward 3 inches. I am going to be going one further sometime in the future and droping a caddy 500 into my old P'UP. it is going to be converted to 4WD with Rockwells under it though.

Sorry steelerfan, but this is the second post you made that states the P'UP and S-10 are basically the same. not even close. overall dimeensions, yes. Mechanically, no. The chevy luv was the same as the P'UP.

well hi friends, after a short hospital stay i am back(radial fracture,two crushed fingers and cuts to numerous to mention)like i said in my last post here i had gotten an engine/or was getting it i meant and had checked for the fit.i was just about right in the measurements.remember i said just about.lol...first off the motor/tranny mounts fit like a glove.....oil pan did not fit at all.....had to use a pan for a gran torino(1974 model)the firewall still had to be reshaped with a "bfh" to accept the new/bigger tranny
then after i got the motor bolted in and took the engine hoist off the motor i noticed that the torsion bars were making an awful sound as i leaned on the fenders while werkin on the engine the reason was that the old torsion bars were way too thin and wayyyyy to flexable to work with all the newfound weight...the solution was getting a beefier set of bars from calmini which had a set of em from an earlier run that is now considered an obsolete part....i also installed a set of heavier duty shocks to keep em from bottoming out really hard.....well with all that taken care of i went to the boneyard to hunt down a drive shaft to cut up for a tranny yoke.found one and took the stock zuzu shaft and the other to a shop and had em weld me up another shaft outta the two parts...it looked great..was unbalanced as all get out.had to have it balanced.... installed it and
then tried to get motor running....found out that motor had a bad computer module and wouldn't signal the injectors...traded it for another module and got the thing running decent and took it for a short spin around the block....my first time layin a drag i killed the rear end and overheated the engine...now im lookin into finding a better rear end and a new radiator.....ill fill ya guys n later.i have taken over 50 pics and im gonna post em this weekend comming up....the wiz

Hey whats up? Good to have ya back.Your havin some of the same fun I went throough. I had to use a Griffin radiator from Summit for mine. I too wasted the rear three days after I got it goin. Check out my pics, I recently updatedem.If you wanna keep your front suspention and six lug wheels, find a 80's model Wagoneer. It has the same exact width and six lugs. The rear will be a AMCHD20 and is alot better than the ZU's wimpy rear.See ya.

cool pics man, thanks for all the helpful info!...i been lookin at the local boneyards around here for a new rearend and so far no luck, but i read in a swapper paper about a place not so far away from me that has custom rears made to order and can hop up/beef up most rears so i mite just ring them up n see what they gotta say!...well i got the little truck sittin back on the lift again in the garage and im lookin at the tranny oil cooler and where i ended up installing it, it looks as if that if i hit a speed bump the cooler has had it...im mite try a slimline kit for a hot rod from summit and run it on top of the radiator frame...as far as the radiator is concerned i got the one from the x cop car i got the engine out of...its kinda thick but it fits now that i finally cut the cross peice from the top of the body/rad support and trimmed the sides of the body with a plazma torch(i love that torch), the other radiator i resold to a kid along with the old zuzu motor for him to rebuild i guess(god knows why)i ran the motor for approximatly 2 hrs and it didnt get overheated a bit( i added some water wetter to it as well)o and i changed the thermostat to a lower temprature as well!
also i found while i was taking loose the rear end from the truck that the "custom driveshaft i had made here locally kinda looked twisted a bit so i will try to get another more beefy one made as funds get freed up a bit(med bills are killin me)the wife is really nagging me to swap her transmission in her camaro so i'll probably be doin that over the next few days....gimme some sugestions on where to post my photos guys and any advice on the driveshaft would be great.the wiz

Hey wiz, sounds like your havin fun.Wish I had a plasma cutter, I just had to use a sawzall. Did you check out where I put my tranny coler? Its a slimline cooler from summit.It shouldnt be too hard to find a junked Wagoneer, they'er a dime a dozen around hear.I went ahead and put mine in spring over for lift and I didnt even have to move the spring perches, the rear bolted right in.I even got the Zu Ebrake cables to work on it. Just had to get an adapter to hook the metric brake line to the sae rear brake hose and it was done.I wouldnt recomend usin the ZU rear, the ujoints are way to small aand would be easier to beef your driveshaft if you could go to a bigger ujoint.I used the shaft out of the waggy and it fit perfect, no cuttin.

the s10 v-8 conversion mounts should work on an isuzu as long as it is the v 6 version. they sellf for aprox 50 to 75 for the set jegs and summit cataloges have the kits.
