I am looking a purchasing a 1993 cherokee with a high output 4.0L inline six but the vehical has 264,000 Kilometers on it, will the engine still be relativly reliable?

we had an 88 xj with 146K on it and the engine was the most reliable part of it, the electrical stuff was getting worrisome so we traded it off.

it always started and ran fine, I was however scared the auto trans would go bad on me so I changed the atf fluid once per year.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Our '97 ZJ just rolled over 132,000 miles and I still consider it brand new. The crank sits on seven main bearings andthe engine holds seven qts of oil with the optional PH8A filter. 200,ooo miles is COMMON for these engines with good maintenance./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

No problem. I know of Jeeps with 200,000 MILES on them and they're still ticking along fine. Our TJ has 94,000 miles on it (150,000 KM)and it'll still just about lift the front tires, gets 20 mpg, and burns no oil at all. It also has not led an easy life with wheeling and my lead foot.

For those who don't want to do the conversion, 264,000 KM is 165,264 miles.

JEEPN - you're always taking care of us. I was just reaching for my conversion notebook and there you go and do it for me. Thanks.
The engine could very well be reliable with that many miles (or kilometers) on it if it was taken care of. If the oil was changed regularly, then the engine should still have a lot of good miles left on it. My engine on the other hand only has 87,000 miles and it could use a rebuild. I don't think the previous owner took very good care of it.

My friend's 4.0 in his '93 YJ just went out with around 130K miles; however, i have another friend with an '88 XJ and his 4.0 is still running with a little over 200K, but it's starting to sound rough and losing power, so a rebuild is in the near future. I know that's not much info, but the only solid stuff I can provide. I have a 4 banger in my '97 TJ with 53K. Anybody know what to expect out of it?

Bradwest-

CJDave hit the nail on the head. If the motor has been taken care of, it will go for many miles. If not, it's life may be greatly shortened. Do a compression test and look for oil in the air cleaner.

Good Luck!

Ya. the 4.0 liter's are great engines when it comes to high miles. My dads 88 Xj has 312000 kilometers on it and it doesn't knock or use oil, it has great oil pressure and you can still burn the tires off on a warm day. It all depends one what you use it for and how you drive it. His jeep is in such great shape because the previous owners where an old couple that used it to commute between two cities so its all highway miles. versus my yj (258) which suposidly has 125 thousand kilometers on it, But I doubt it, and judging from all the work I have had to do to it(and I won't be done in the near future) it has had one hard life and its owner was most likely some dumb a$$ city yuppie punk who drove the sh!t out of it. In my opinion if you treat her right she'll last forever.
