Is oil stop leak bad for you engine?

I just added, I think a pint of G2 oil stop to my motor since the synthetic has been slowly leaking from the main seal. Is this stuff going to hurt my engine. I just want to use it once until I repair/replace the rear main seal.

Russ, from what I hear it will cause all your seals to swell(leakers or not)and the good ones will wear faster than normal. But you might stop your leak. Also from what I hear if you add it once you will thereafter have to add it all the time(oil change). Oh you might clog some oil pasages as well. I may be way off base so see what other people have to say. With your low milage you can probably get away with it. When you gonna do the seal by the way?

I have to concur with Andy. Everything I've heard about quick fixes has been bad. Most fix-it additives end up causing problems in the long run. I haven't heard anything about this stuff in particular.

Experience says this stuff is bad news. I know of two instances where otherwise good running, but oil seeping engines were treated with this stuff, and one spun a rod bearing and one just plain locked-up. Coincidence? maybe, but I won't ever use the stuff.

A common trick by used car salesmen (in the old days...of course they would never do it now) was to add break fluid to the oil.... i.e., it causes the seals to sweal. And as stated above, creates more problems than it solves.

Should I drain my crankcase as soon as possible? The motor only has 24,000 on it (I-6), and I run mobil 1 synthetic. Would it be a good idea to clean out that engine right away?

$40 is cheaper than $1500. Know what I mean? It couldn't hurt, but the damage may have already been done.
