If nobody has a definitive answer just get your tape measure out and get a little bit dirty. Measure the distance from the front of the bellhousing to the rear of the transmission on both vehicles and compare the lengths. If they are withing a couple of inches you can probably avoid needing new driveshafts.

if the J truck had a V8 they usually used a 5 inch spacer and /or a deeper bellhousing to keep the tranny in teh same location as with teh I6 engine, so if thats the case the input shaft on the T176 will be about 9 inches too long.

Actually the jeep j10 has a 258 in it. But i was eventually going to swap the tranny in. if it was a bolt in. I will probobly already have my lift in and i would not want to alter driveshafts twice but i could do both at the same time if i have to. the only thing that stinks about that is down time is longer! also i was thinking of putting in the t176 cause eventually it will see a v8 360 but not for a while. I know the t176 is not the strongest tranny but i think it will be ok. Not bullet proof but a decent set up. what do u think of my idea is this a good idea or what??? Thanks in advance

You can look at the factory tranny options on ORC, and maybe find some lengths there, I think its pretty unlikely a T4 and a T176 will be close enough to use the same driveshafts..
