Hey guys, I am usually on the Toyota off-road board, but I found a vehicle I am interested in today. I found a white 98 Grand Cherrokee 5.9L Limited with 78,500 miles for $9900.00 at a local dealership. I was intersted in thse a few years ago but I don't know about their relaibility or if there are in any common driveline problems associated with the Grand Cherrokees and/or the 5.9L models. This would be my daily driver and is a nice clean model and the price is very reasonable too. Does anyone uggest this model or advice against it? Is there anything I should check for?

Excellent vehicles, just WAY TO EXPENSIVE to keep up with. If you got a bottomless wallet, or if you just plain GOTTA have it, then ya it's worth getting. Otherwise, steer clear of them.

Do you mean that they are expensive to own in general or do you mean to expensive to keep up with as far as like off-road upgrades? I would just drive this as a daily driver. It won't be my off-roader....I was just wondering what would be expensive for it besides GAS.

EXPENSIVE to own period, not to even mention mods. Whats expensive for it? Everything as far as parts are concerned, transmissions are a problem, transfer case is (think of a furry pet that goes "Meow")A/C will give you fits, anything electrical or electronic will also give you a stroke, etc, etc. Like I have said before, they rock, they are great fun to own, THEY ARE JUST SPENDY$$$$$$$$. Gas mileage kinda bites too, I M O, a Cherokee is way better way to go, less expensive to own, operate, and mod. But these are only my opinions based on my ownership of a 96, and friends expierence with a 98, 97, and a 2000.

Go to ALLDATA and you can check on things like recalls-NHTSA.gov gives TSB titles and recall info. You can also try the NAGCA board. 98 Grands had some tranny/transfer case issues with the Quadradrive. The 5.9 was/is a gas hog way beyond its horses (in stock config). Other than that, it's a jeep. I love my Grand- it sure rides nice compared to my xj and man does it ffffllllllyyyyyy!!
