I'm having trouble w/ my dana 20 shifting. It dosen't want to go into high range. When I force it to shift it moves forward a notch but dosen't engage all the way (I just get a grinding noise when I try to move). So ........ I have a spare that came out of a J-10 FSJ and the shift linkage is way to far forward. I'm going to twin-stick it and use it while I screw around w/ the original. Found some good write ups on here for the linkage, thanks guys.

Anyone have a good description or pic's of how to remove the interlocking pins? Apparently there is an access panel somewhere and an allen screw?

Re: interlock pin - dana 20

This picture is a D300 but the D20 is very similar in this area. The D300 has two interlocks and the D20 only one. Plug is on the side and shouldn't be hard to find (under the mud and grease), items 2 & 3 in this picture.

Hope this helps

I found and removed the plug. But behind it I only see the shift rod (solid) and not the pin. If there was a pin there that I'm not seeing, how would I remove it? Is it suppose to just fall out?

I'm having trouble w/ my dana 20 shifting.

I'd take a close look at the nut that holds the shifter

Did I say that out loud?

Re: interlock pin - dana 20

After you disconnect the shift forks you should be able to turn and then remove the right shift rod (front drive engage).

I think that the interlock is between the two shift shafts and will prevent the right shift rod from coming out unless the left shift rod (high/low range) is in low (or is it high, you will get it). The interlock will then come out through the hole in the side and the left shift rod should turn and come out also.

My memory of a D300 is sorta fuzzy and it's been alot longer since I was into a D20 so I hope that there isn't something I am forgeting to do here. Go slow and look at the exploded views and I'm sure you will get it apart.

Re: interlock pin - dana 20

I now believe that there is a set screw that has to be loosened to remove the shift rod. I can see it in the pic where the right shift fork meets the right shift rod.

I don't have a allen wrench that long and even if I did I'm afraid that I would never get it set back in the right place again. Also, reinstalling the springs and ball bearings that hold the shift rods in place has me a little nervous.

So, I'm going to wimp out and to the twinstick w/o removing the interlocking pin. I'm thinking I will still have 2 hi and lo in the rear' and 4 hi and lo. That's all I think I need.

Well damn... go to Sears and get a set of Allens. This isn't brain surgery. Yes you do have to remove the setscrew that holds the shift fork to the shift rod.

Sorry, sometimes I just have to say D'oh!

You can do it.... it's just a greasy box of gears... you have thumbs and likely an adjustable wrench to put on that long allen wrench when you get back from Sears.

If you don't really feel comfortable with taking that D20 apart you should find someone that does. Sorry if I took you someplace into the deep.

I hope this isn't a

Re: interlock pin - dana 20

Could you explain a little bit on the j-truck linkage??

Is the whole assembly longer, ie the hande is further away from the t-case than it is on a cj?

Reason I ask is after the t-18 swap I need to lenghten mine, and have been too lazy to cut and weld three new rods to move the handle forward... a linkage out of a j-truck could be the slacker way out...

Just curious how its different from the cj linkage.
Thanks

Tranny shop? um......no, Pat did raise me better than that.
Picked up some stuff to do it with this afternoon, then got drunk, and I just made it home (10:40). Ice storm here. I'll post pic's of the project as I go.

And yes, the J-10 just has extensions to make the linkage longer, no short cuts that I can see.

Re: interlock pin - dana 20

Garage? I don't have heat in the garage anymore.
So I put it in a wheelbarrel and it's in the guest bedroom, along w/ the welder.
It should only take a few hours, I'm guessing, but I can milk it for at least a dozen pic's if you think that will upset someone.

Here is a pic that shows the lenght of the linkage for those interested.

EDIT: oh, no I don't drink much. usually just a couple beers and I'm wasted.

I am all for you miliking this out into a bunch of pics.

In fact I like all posts with progress pics, the jeep folder grows and grows...

You know it would only be a three beer job if you drank something other than bud light....

Like Pat said....whine, whine, whine!

That J-truck shifter is the same as the Waggy's, peepsters, & Commandos....ditch it now!!! Your "inline" CJ linkage should be fine *if* you bail on the twinstick... Also, *IF* the J-truck D20 will boltin (didn't come from an auto or something weird..T176, etc.), chances are it doesn't have the interlock pills...mine didn't. Toad's the one that tipped me off about the Commando D20s (and probably any of them with that stoopid "U" shifter) not having the interlock....Great for twinsticking....BAD if you screw up and get the ranges opposed [mushroom cloud]

Good call Dave!
There is no interlocking pill after all.
So here is the work in progress.
