Installed New Fuel Pump... Car Wont\'t Start. HELP!

Hello, I just installed a new mechanical fuel pump on my samurai. The car started and ran for 30 sec and then died. I am assuming that it was just running off the gas that was still in the carb. I know that there is air in the line and the pump from when I disconnected the gas line. Do I need to prime the pump? If so, how? I tried to prime it by putting gas into the inlet with a syringe (while it is installed) but most of the gas ended up on the floor of my garage. Will I be able to get the air out of the line by cranking my starter for long enough? Any help would be greatly appreciated because I need to drive it back to school later tonight. Thanks.

the mech fuel pump will not pump fuel unless the pushrod was installed also. forgetting to install the pushrod is fairly common.

if you did install the rod, then your fuel lines should fill right back up and after a little cranking, the carb should fill back up with gas.

Thanks for the reply, should the pushrod be included with the new pump? I got my pump from autozone and it came with the pump and gasket. The directions show the pushrod but one didnt come out with the old pump. What come off with the old pump is what I put on with the new pump. Thanks for your help.

I just removed the pump again and the original pushrod is still in place. I slid it back and forth to make sure that it wasnt stuck and then put the fuel pump back on. I have been trying to crank it over for the past 5 min and it still wont start. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Installed New Fuel Pump... Car Wont\'t Start. H

Sorry to keep posting but I would really like to get this figured out. I just pulled off the fuel line from the inlet and had my brother try to crank it over. I put my finger over the inlet to try to feel if I would get any suction and unfortunately it didn't. I noticed that my old pump has more play in the lever than this new one. Perhaps the new lever is too stiff for the rod to push? I have no clue. Please help. Thanks.

I don't have any experience with mechanical pumps, but you might want to check the following:......

Is there fuel in the tank and is the fuel line free of obstructions?

Fuel filter clogged?

Possible frozen obstruction in the line?

As cold as it's been, if your zuke is outside you may have frozen water in the line. I had the stock fuel filter 1/3 full of ice, it ran til it drained the carb and wouldn't fire again.

Could you take the new pump off, put a short piece of hose on it and try pumping out of a small container of gas to see if it's working?

It's either not getting gas or not working...

Re: Installed New Fuel Pump... Car Wont\'t Start. H

My samurai has been sitting outside; however, I was able to start it to drive it into my garage. Maybe the gas froze in the line while it was disconnected???

Should I be able to feel suction from the inlet on the fuel pump when the gas line is disconnected and I am cranking the engine? I tried doing this and I didn't feel any suction

The pump is a new pump from Autozone... at least I have a lifetime warranty if it turns out to be the pump.

Thanks for replying. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Do you have plenty gas in the tank?

If yes, I'd undo the gas cap (release vacuum/let gas lines burp?) and spin the motor with the starter. It should crank.

If this doesn't work....Is the fuel filter COMPLETELY stopped up?

Oh yeah, are your lines hooked up correct? your not pumping fuel back through a return line are you?

Re: Installed New Fuel Pump... Car Wont\'t Start. H

My gas tank is about 1/4 full and I tried to release the pressure in the tank already. I am also sure that I hooked the gas lines up properly because I just transferred them from the old pump to the new pump.

Does anyone know if I should be feeling suction from the inlet if I remove the gas line and try cranking the motor. I tried doing this and I didn't feel anything, however, the pump wasn't primed so I wasn't sure if I should be getting suction. The pushrod is in place.

I am at school right now and the samurai is home so I wont be able to work on it again until this weekend. Any help would be great. Thanks to those that have offered their ideas.
