Info on a lockright

370 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  **DONOTDELETE**
I currently have a 79 cj-5 with the model 20 rear with 1 piece axles and its suppose to have a trac lock in it. Well the track lock is whooped. you can stop the wheel from turning with 1 finger. I am interested in a lockright, but according to the catolog, it will not work with factory traclock. Does anyone have info on this? Thanks

You should buy a new carrier for the gears you will be running. If cost is a major consideration, try a Detroit EZ locker - never broke one with 34" tires. It is a side gear locker like the lock rite - for the AMC 20 - the ez locker seems to be stronger. Someone used to make a specially heat treated carrier that was polished for stress relief for a 20 that was a bit stronger - side gear lockers exert more force on the carrier to spread "open" from side to side.

I would choose the side gear locker over the Detroit Locker unless you spent a bunch of time off road - they can be brutal on the old drivetrain on the pavement.
