I was told by a friend he saw a rotary powered suzuki at the zukimelt. Anyone know how this was or how I can talk to him?
I am a big rotary person who builds rotary motors in TN. I would really like to have a rotary powered trail rig but being new to the whole 4x4 thing I do have a few questions.

If anyone know this person or how I might be able to get ahold of him, please let me know.

It Was probably TD Graham's truck he saw buildup here:
Rotary Swap on Izook
He passed a line of about 15 of us on the way back from the night run running nearly 100mph! that thing would haul A$$!!
I have a rotary for mine, and I am probably gonna' have to rebuild it...I may be getting ahold of you for some parts sources!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/40BEER.gif

I daily drive one. What would you like to know?

Mine is 1986 Fuel injected 13b, with a shortened RX7 trans.

I have stock gearing, which is great for highway or the sand play I do.

It works well. 160 HP will do nicely in a Sammi

OK so I understand that new motor mounts and tranny mounts need to be made. How hard is this. 12a is carb'd, but I would want to keep the fuel injection I've gotten used to in my 91 2wd sammy. let's say I try the 13b with the manual tranny it comes with, where is my shifter going to sit? Also how did you go about wiring the efi? did you swap everything including the gauge cluster? Info would be great. I have been thinking about the gti swap because it's supposedly kinda easy. But in the back of my mind I would like either toyota 4agze or rotary perferably the higher HP 13b, the turbo would be even better.

Well, in my case there was quite a bit of fabrication. The problem with any rotary is heat. The turbo would make that problem worse.

The 12a and RX7 trans is what I had previously. I killed it by overheating it. The problem (besides the owner not turning the fan back on) is that the stock RX trans was so long, that it had to have a electric fan in front of the radiator. Fans don't work good that way.

Now, the 13b is 20mm longer. I also wanted a nice, reliable mechanical fan. So I shortened the transmission by six inches. I cut down the tail housing, shortened the shift shaft and the output shaft, the built a custom housing to support the tail shaft bushing.

I built the engine mounts, trans mount, air filter to MAF sensor adaptor, header, exhaust system, battery tray, new radiator and oil cooler mounts. I deleted all of the 13b stock emissions devices (the ECM is primative for a port injected system, so it didn't even care)

I used most of the stock harness, while rerouting some coil wiring though the unused emissions wiring. I also had to add a high pressure fuel pump and filter.

Some pics of this are on my web page. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/40BEER.gif

i really wanted to do this swap into my "good" samurai about 6-7 years ago. i think the rotory powerband would work great in a street driven samurai.

the reason i never did the swap is i never once found a whole wrecked injected rx7 for what i thought was a good price. i wanted one with a good motor and trans that started up and ran perfect. the only ones i found for affordable prices needed new motors or had serious fuel injection problems...not what i wanted. where or how did you all find/ locate your cheap donor cars??

Actually, I bought it with the 12A already installed.

The donor car for my remake was purchased from a young coworker who was leaving town and needed cash. It was rough, but he drove it every day. I paid $500 for it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It lasted about 9 months of hard use before it needed a rebuild. (It already has 160,000 miles on it when I got it)

I rebuilt it, replacing all seals, etc. and did a mild street port. I also had the injectors rebuilt and balanced.
New stronger clutch, too. The Mazda engineers didn't plan on that clutch being used to light up four rooster tails of sand. I had slipped it good a few times.

Bonus Feature: The RX7 also yeilded a limited slip diff that will work in my Miata, after I turbo it.

This is exactly what I want. Man I wish you were closer to TN. I have an 1988 S4 13b 6 port motor with 130k on it. Pulled from a running gxl for a TII conversion. I pulled the motor, tranny, harness, and ecu in all one pull. Want to figure out exactly what I have to do to get this one in and running. Once running and bugs worked out I will pull the motor and rebuild it using RA seals. I ahve thought about using a 87-88 Turbo II flywheel so I can use the larger clutch as well. Also maybe going to a rtek ECU flashing to get a bit more hp and allow me to run 720cc injectors in the secondaries. That sure will bump the HP under wide open throttle when I want to pass those V-8 buggys on the straight run.
The trans cut down.... did a shop do that? If so do they have the specs still so I can send them a tranny?
Did you have to lift the body? Are you using the rx7 engine harness? If so what/how did you trigger it on the samurai key switch? Sorry tons of questions, but am excited because you have done this and it works. I really would love to have this done to mine before the Zukimelt 07. Man that would be cool. And how shoot me a pm and and I can e-mail you my number if your ok with talking to me.
Thanks,
Chad

Nope, I did it myself. I cut the tail housing with a sawzall. I cut it next to an existing rib. I used a file to finish it square. Then I made a steel plate to cover it and support the output bushing. I cut 6" out of the output shaft with a die grinder and made an interference fit sleeve to reconnect the halves. I ended up with .002" runout, better than it started with. I'll send you all of the pictures I have in a zip file.[ QUOTE ]

No body lift. I had to cut a small opening next to the gas pedal to clear the starter. I used the RX7 harness, but with several modifications. In the RX, the coils are on their own harness, coming out of the drivers side of the dash. There were several extra wires in the main harness, that used to control a bunch of uneeded solenoids and such. I used them to run the coils. You'll need to be fairly comfortable with wiring harnesses and diagrams for this. It connects to a start signal, battery, etc. I also made all of the mounts, the air filter to air meter adaptor, radiator and oil cooler mounts, oil cooler lines, clutch master cylinder mounts, the exhaust, the header, the list goes on. It's no small task. I also made the rear axle truss, both bumpers and new seat brackets to support Miata seats and keep the floor from cracking. I figure it's about 1/3 Suzuki, 1/3 Mazda and 1/3 Joe.
