hi,

i was wondering which way should the open gap of the spark plugs point on a 258 engine (up or down). i heard that if you point the open gap towards the open area in the cylinder chamber, you can increase combustion efficiency.

I haven't heard of anyone bothering with this in something that is so relatively low powered. Sorry, can't provide any real useful info on this though.

The open side goes towards where the fuel is coming from, the intake side of the chamber. Most hp auto companies sell the washers,
I think I've seen them in Summit's catalog. Like FNG said, on a stock 258 you probably won't see a benefit, years ago we used to
do this to get the extra 1/2 hp or so out of racing motors, but personally I haven't bothered since.
