I\'m running out of vehicles to drive!

Tonight, while driving the Zuk around Independence, an ominous rumbling sound slowly developed in the rear. It appeared most pronounced above 30 MPH and went away when I got off the gas.

My guess is it could be the Differential input flange bearing (it had a hard life dealing with driveshaft imbalances) or the wheel bearings who have had more baths in the last 3 years than the rest of it's existance.

Any comments on this?

Also, what year Toyotas do I look at for for the Double Cardan front driveshaft? It's a bit of a hard search and I have a bad habit of forgetting things I don't write down...

Up to 1985 Toys had a SFA and a double cardigan front shaft... Rockrats adapter will work perfectly with those. 1986 and up toys also had a double cardigan, they were IFS, and the flange is a bit larger but will work fine with a bit of enlarging the holes.

ok...the reason i ask is i know where i can aquire a pair of matched SA yota axles from the same truck. im thinking with the yota axles @ 3" wider....with my current 32x11.50 tires and 15x7 or 15x8 standard back spaced wheels that i could use trail tough fender flares and still keep the tires completely covered (stupid PA laws....)

From: http://azrockcrawler.com/ go to tech then go to Toyota axle swap

In reply to:

Stock Toyota front axle measurements for comparison:
55.5" wide, 29" spring perch centers, '79-85 Toyota trucks and 4runners
63.5" wide, (set up for coil springs) 90-97 FJ80 and FZJ80 Landcruisers
'86-95 IFS front end is about 58.5" wide
'93-98 T100 IFS front end is about 65" wide

Toyota Rear Axle Widths:
55" wide, '79-85 trucks/4runners
58" wide, '86-95 trucks/4runners
60.75" wide, '95.5-up Tacomas/4runners
66.75" wide, '93-98 T100 trucks

BACK TO THE SUBJECT........
Ack,
Sounds like you need to rebuild the rear end. I see no reason to pull the center section for a rebuild and not do the outer bearings while your at it.

I run a '90 Toy CV shaft.

Tracker Update:

Here is where I am now:

Driver's side splice at the top.

The driver's side was, by far, the easiest. Nothing around to cut into except the brakeline.

On the passenger's side, I had to deal with the battery tray, the A/C plumbing (still charged, by the way!) and a major hunk of the harness.

Next step: finish trimming the batery tray and bolt on a set of angle-iron fixtures to align and stablize the structure for welding! The angle iron fixtures will bolt on the top edge in place of the fender.
