The gear/rack setup that moves the rod and starts the car on my 83 CJ broke. I got the new part to fix the ignotion but cant get the steering column to accept the new parts. It seems like I need to take more apart in order to put the new parts in, but I can't figure out how. I have a tilt. The upper half of the column is off. The actual ignition(where the key goes) is out, but from there what do I do?

not completely sure as to what part your trying to replace but I recently changed the "tumbler" and Ignition switch in my 84 cj7. I pulled the steerting wheel off, took the blinker assembly out, and I did what I had to do to get the actually steering column apart so I could take it into the garage.

The tumbler has a little button that you need to press for it to come out.

Not sure if this helps any.. :|
