I want a set of 3.73\'s for a 14 bolt SF 9.5\"

Hey guys, I just got a 14 bolt SF with the 9.5" ring gear for CHEAP!!! /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif It's in great condition, but the only problem for me is that I have 3.73's in my front IFS, and it has 4.10's in it. I would like to run 4.10's later, but now I don't have the coinage to install the 14, and convert the front to 4.10. /wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif Anyone have a set of these gears, or know someone with them? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Oooohh, just thought of something, /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif it's got the Eaton Gov-lok in it, and would the posi still work with the 3.73's, or would I have to get a different one? Damn. Anything else need to be changed to make the 3.73's work other than the gears? Hope not....../wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

Congrats on the axle!/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif
By all means, LEAVE THE 4.10's IN THERE !!!!!!
and change your front diff to 4.10's (or 4.11's) to match. This will be a much better setup! 4.10's and 33's (285's) are perfect together /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif
And you would be able to upgrade to larger tires in the future (which you know you will want to/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif) without the expense of the gears and install all over again.
Either way you are talking about the same amount of "coinage"/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif, whether you swap the 3.73's into the 14bSF/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif, or 4.10's into the front /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

You gonna do the work? If so, why not just refrain from using 4wd until you buy gears? If you have the resources to do it whether it's you or you and a buddy then you're just paying for parts which are close enough in price to justify replacing the front and having 4.10s front and back/wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

Re: I want a set of 3.73\'s for a 14 bolt SF 9.5\"

I dunno what kind of wheeling you do, but most of what I do is mud and trails.
Only time I absolutely need 4WD is in the mud. I usually leave it in 2wd until I'm loosing traction, then I stop, put it in 4, and spin the hell out of 'em.
What I'm getting at is is 3.73 and 4.10 is pretty close, and if you use your 4wd in lippery conditions only (until you swap the front to 4.10) then you'll have no problems.
I'm with that other guy, please don;t take a good set of 4.10's out of a 14b.
Take it easy,

Re: I want a set of 3.73\'s for a 14 bolt SF 9.5\"

Well, I am thinking about a solid axle swap and 35's eventually. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif So I was thinking would the 4.10's be okay for 35's? Whatever gear I go with soon, it will be driven around daily for a few years before the swap, lift, and 35's. I get to 'wheel about once a week now, on the weekends, but the rest of the time I am driving it around on the SoCal road system. So I want to have it done properly when I put the rear in. I am considering changing the front to 4.10's, but from my understanding they are expensive, and doing swaps on the IFS is tricky and costly. I am not a mechanic by any means, so this will be done by someone else. Think I know a place that can do it for cheap, but I dunno. Have to ask the owner. Thanks for the help so far guys.

The front IFS diff and the rear 14b FF should cost VERY close to same for a gear swap (Parts & labor).
Definetly have a shop do your gear swap.

I think you're in San Diego. Try Pro Gear in Kearny Mesa, or Oceanside Driveline. Pro Gear is a top notch shop, but pricey. O'side is good too, just without the rep that Pro Gear has. I have had friends go to both for IFS fronts, no problems yet from 3 trucks. Hope this helps, Congrats on the 14 bolt.

Re: I want a set of 3.73\'s for a 14 bolt SF 9.5\"

The 4.10s should be good with 35"s. Sounds like you got a few choices:

Change your front to 4.10s, buy a straight axle with 4.10s when you do your swap

Change your rear to 3.73s, change your rear again when you do your swap because you'll probably want a lower gear ratio with 35"s

Or what about putting the newly acquired 14 bolt on right before you do the swap and keep the existing(?) axle if you still have it.

Re: I want a set of 3.73\'s for a 14 bolt SF 9.5\"

Here's a few more variables for for you guys to chew on. Does anybody know anything of the second post I put up? Relating to the Eaton Posi and swapping gears with it? Also, this may be reaching, but does anyone know about gear ratios for Ford/wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif Reverse Cut D44's from the late 70's? Before they went to that TTB mess/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif. That would be the axle I would put up front, so I need to make sure I can match the ratios.
I will look into those two places Rhino, thanks. I am in Mira Mesa by the way.

nice axle AJM - where did you pick it up? if i were you i think i would just wait and keep the axle in your garage till you do the swap. no sense spending the money to put 4.10s up front if youre gonna replace it anyways. but anyways - this brought up a coupla more questions from me relating to my other post about solid axle swap. #1 - whats the difference in a SEMI-floater? also, what years ford would i need to get a front dana 60 out of? do all of them have the same kind or are there different ones? just want to know what im looking for. thanks again yall

Re: I want a set of 3.73\'s for a 14 bolt SF 9.5\"

Hey Mike, This is from Dynatrac's website:

Full-Floating vs. Semifloating

Any drive axle no matter what kind, has to perform two functions. The first is to support the weight of the vehicle safely, and second to turn the wheels and propel the vehicle forward.

Most half-ton and lighter vehicles are typically equipped with a semifloating rear end. In a semifloater the wheel bolts directly to a flange formed at the end of the axle shaft. A single bearing supports the outer end of the shaft and is located just inside the housing ends. Therefore, the axle shaft itself has 2 forces acting on it at all times. It has the weight of the vehicle with payload pushing down on it , and the force of the engine twisting on it.

In heavier applications like 3/4-ton and heavier trucks, semifloaters are much less desirable because the heavier weight of the vehicle combined with the twisting forces can cause a semifloating shaft to bend or break off. Obviously having your rear wheel pass you on the road can be somewhat unsettling. To prevent this from happening fullfloaters use an axle housing with a spindle formed at the end of the axle tubes. The wheel is bolted to a separate hub which spins on 2 opposed tapered roller bearings. Since the weight of the vehicle is supported by the spindle on the housing and not the axle shaft, the shaft is only subjected to twisting forces from the engine.

Re: I want a set of 3.73\'s for a 14 bolt SF 9.5\"

mphZ71, I got it off of eBay. Somebody posted about it here a week or so ago. I ended up in a bidding war, so I didn't get it as cheap as it originally was supposed to be (95 BUCKS /wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif) but I still got a great deal. With the price to have it mounted up (whenever I do that) I will only have as much invested as if I had gone and bought one from an axle shop here in town. I'm quite proud of myself....../wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif I think I am going to leave it out for a while. Just got to find someplace to fit the f$%^ing thing. I'm in the Marines and I definately can't put it in the barracks.../wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: I want a set of 3.73\'s for a 14 bolt SF 9.5\"

Saw on your posting that you need 3.73 gears for a 14 bolt rear. I don't know if you'd be interested in buying another
rear, but I have a positraction 14 bolt SF rear with 3.73 gears for sale. Rear end is perfect. I upgraded to a Dana 70
one ton rear.
