I recently picked up a 93 XJ, 4 door Country model. It has way too many miles (not to worried about it, can always put in another motor) and the AW4 auto tranny. Which, leads me to my questions:

1) What is the gear ratios for the AW4?? I've only been able to figure out that 3rd is 1:1 and 4th is .705:1.

2) How reliable is this tranny for mild wheeling and daily driving (I have four-five other vehicles I beat on while wheeling)

Also, some quick general observations about this tranny:

1) The tranny filter is NOT cheap. Lists out around here for over $50.

2) Use 1/2 or bigger or air to remove the four bolts holding the tranny filter, since they used it put it on.

3) It seems that the factory seals the pan with permatex...ALOT of permatex. Get read to have some fun with carb/brake cleaner and a wire brush.

4) Remove the tranny dipstick tube from the tranny and never expect it to fit again. Also, you'll have to remove the tranny dipstick to get the pan down enough to change the tranny filter.

Also, one last question, what IS the easiest way to change the oil filter?? I know the way I did it isn't right (from the top with a large pair of channel locks), since it broke the oil sending unit and was wondering for future knowledge.

Thanks!

The the AW-4 is a very good transmission an will hold up fine in all off roading situatons. The "1-2" selector position can be modified so that it will not upshift from 1st to 2nd automatically. Do a search to find the particular thread that describes the mod.

The oil filter location is tight but not as tight as it was on my 1986 2.8 XJ. I can usually loosen the filter on the 4.0l HO by using one of those cheap rubber oil filter grippers that are found at auto stores. That seems to do the trick and gives my hand a better grip about 95% of the time. If the filter is on too tight for that, I drive a long slotted screwdriver thru the filter body and then use that as a lever to start turning the filter . Then I finish spinning it off by hand. That method is a little messier but it works in the confined space.

Use an old leather belt.... loop it around the filter and pull up....hang the belt over the filter... buckle on left...lift buckle up from under the filter on the right side and pull the tag end through.....then pull up on the tag end. It spins the filter off..... you might have to manipulate the belt directions depending on the filter directions.....but you get the point....

A belt! Why didn't I THINK of that. Figures, since I had one on at the time and have another that is going to be recruited for this task.

I will have to look for that mod. I know of one to keep it in whatever gear you have it in located here:

http://www.genxj.com/locktq.htm

and here:

http://www.jeepbarracks.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=19&mode=&order=0&thold=0

as well as an article dealing with a fading shift point in 4th here:

The Pirate has a ton of info (as usual) like the AW-4 Manual in PDF form here:

http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billavista/PDFs/AW4_manual.PDF

They have quite a few topics how to mate up a D300 upto a AW-4 as well as reclocking a D300 to have a passenger side droop. Since I have a D300 laying around, I MIGHT start playing around with a swap like that. Let me know if you want the links for the D300 info or not and I will post them.
