I like them..

My wife and I have been looking at them..we live in Michigan in the snow belt, and like the price and now being able to get a lift kit is a big plus.
Im very happy with my 87 s10 blazer butshe wants a 4x4 for family things and the KIA we can get all 3 kids into and I wonder how they would do on some EZ trail driving.. any advice on these neat little critters would be great.

Re: I like them..

The Jeep XJ Cherokee is the best SUV style offroading vehicle there is.. Besides a Range Rover.. But for the price you cant beat it.. Proven drivetrain.. The 4.0 Engines can last 200k plus miles and are super strong (fast).. Storage is plentiful.. Fits the kids and some gear.. Aftermarket has seen this and now there is a plethora of lifts, accessories, and performance parts.. The XJ has been sold around the world and has not changed much in the last 15 years.. Parts are everywhere.. Its a proven vehicle.. Plus I just heard it will be around till 2005 when Jeep had a replacement for it.. Hmmm even Jeep knows its a good vehicle..
I have driven my stock XJ in to some territory that suprised me and blew me away that it could make it back there.. Mild mods are in the future for it to expand its off-road ability.. I truly believe it can climb over anything..
People try to compare the other manufactures SUV's to the Jeep and its just wrong.. Rav4, Sportage the MB 300 or whatever that thing is, Hondas whatever, Ford Exploder, they are all SUV bodies on a car chassis.. Look underneath.. Even your blazer is one of them.. They all have IFS which is suited for the street.. Solid front axle is the way to go if you want to go crawling around in the woods...
Dont get me wrong.. I have been a die hard Chevy fan.. Its my first Jeep. I learned the hard way, for the last 6 years I have been fooling myself that I could build up my 94 S-10 4wd into a killer offroad vehicle.. 7" and running 33's I have found the limits are the IFS.. Guess what, there is a solid front axle swap in my trucks near future.. Ironic thing is, they are Jeep axles../wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

Re: I like them..

The Explorer is actually on a truck chassis. Thats why a lot of car test don't like it because of the truck feel????I guess you just can't win in the car making buisiness, its either too mushy, too rough, not high enough, not low enough????? Oh well my F-150 is everything and then some for the work I expect it to do!!!!!!!

Re: I like them..

Hey man, ignore them. I agree with you. I saw one in either Four Wheeler or 4Wheel and Offroad a while back that had all this baja factory stuff on it. Skid plate, brush guard, lights, some wide MT's. That, and Calimini makes a lift for them. I think it'd be a cool little 4x4 to go hit some little trails with. I know I can't fit my truck in a lot of trails, and most of them are nothing a Kia couldn't do. I'm not talking rock crawling or gumbo mudding here. Just some small mud puddles, some washouts, stuff like that.

Superbubba you should also factor into the cost of the purchase that a jeep 4.0 if well maintained last for well over 200,000 miles which gives you a lot of vhicle useage after the payments have stopped.

Re: I like them..

Get a JEEP. It's worth it. If you plan on doing some mild offroading now you may never know that in a couple years you will be running wild trails want to be running 33's and dual lockers, try doing that to a KIA. Plus the jeep is worth the money it's cheeper in the long run, parts are cheeper and it is much more trail capable, I'm sure you could find a nice used Cherokee in good shape for the price of a KIA, Don't do it if you get the KIA you will just end up with a jeep or a truck down the line.

Re: I like them..

Yea I have to agree with Jeeper99XJ you'll quickly out grow the Kia ability and experiance wise. And when you do you'll have a hard time finding parts to modify it.I know that you may be thinking that both of us are biased because we both own jeeps but we own them for ggod reason they are very good off road and it's easy to find parts to modify them when you are ready.

Re: I like them..

Why must it be new? If I was in that position, I'd probably sink that $16000 into an older Jeep Cherokee or Chevy S blazer, swap a solid front axle in, and a case from a jeep with crawler gears in it, and it'd handle just about anything you could throw at it... /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif Just my $0.02

Re: I like them..

Hope your garage can fit a bus sized vehicle, she doesn't mind filling up at every gas station she sees, and that she will be walking to every mall she goes to because the things don't fit in parking garages and anything other than full size parking spots./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif I think the Excursions are just a big, flawed joke on Ford. The Edsel 2. /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: I like them..

Geez I didn't think you could pick a worse vehicle than the Kia.. Well you proved me wrong.. Don't be fooled into getting the Explosion.. The $40k is the first year in gas and like the other said it dosn't fit anywhere.. Verify she can drive a large vehicle because most dont know how.. On that note look at the new Suburban with the rear steer next year.. Really cool and the turning radius of a Geo metro..

Re: I like them..

I purchased a 1998 Kia 4x4 for my wife, and had NOTHING but problems. I know of countless others.

Here are just some of the problems I had:
-you are for EVER washing the front wheels from brake dust that eats you clearcoat.
-vacuum hubs do not work.
-wipers not working (some times)
-wheel-well paint flakes off.
-coolant leaks.
-Radio nobs are way too small
-new tranny after 5K

Sure they fixed them for FREE (great warranty) but what good is having it in the shop 4 days every month???
Bottom line you spent 16K for a truck, and that is what you get!

When we went back to the same dealer that we paid 16K for it and just 13 months later - with only 25K miles they said they would only take the truck back and give us only 8K!!! Good to know that they stand by there product Hu?
Look for the qualityto go up, as well as the price, or the company will be out of the US just like YUGO

PS Now she has a 2000 Montaro Sport XLS 4x4, with 20K flawless miles .

Re: I like them..

Our new kia has been great so far. It is the 4 door 4wd version. It is "peppy" and 4h works great. I admit that 4L has issues but other than that I am impressed with it. I was very critical at first but it has won me over, especially for the price. I am a little skeptical about the safety of the 2 door convertible in a rollover however. They seem easy to roll too, that rear rollbar looks a little flimsy.
