I just realized that I ordered my gauges and I did not specify whether I wanted a Water Temp gauge for 120-240 or 140-280. I have a modified Chevy 350, which temp range do I need for this engine?

/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif This is a trick question....right??? A WATER TEMP GAUGE AT 280 DEGREES??? Now Lee.....just THINK about this.....a 280 gauge is for OIL TEMPERATURE...../wwwthreads_images/icons/mad.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/blush.gif

I will assume that this means I should make sure they are shipping the 120-240 Water Temp gauge.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif My least-hungover moonguy/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif is nodding......yes. He says that range would make it a much more useable gauge for you. Moonguys/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gifare particularly attracted to gauges because well......gauges are round/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif, and to a moonguy/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gifthat's sexy.

Just as a side note, lets remember that the boiling point of water increases about 3 degrees for every psi increse in pressure, so with a 15 psi cap, you could approach 260 degrees before a boilover. $.02

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif My moonguy's reasoning was that if it were more than 220 degrees it would be curtains for that SB Chevy anyway, so he was thinking that the lower range gauge would be nearer the peg and would have a greater "SCARE FACTOR" if Lee saw less gauge left, plus it would be more useful in the lower ranges. Man.....these moonguys/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gifcan really put it away....that's the fifth beer so far this morning that has been sneaked out of the cold box; by the office door; and out into the "Jeep Lab" by a little round, yellow "thing"/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gifand it isn't even nine o'clock yet! Oh....the little moonguy/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif just reminded me that altitude will subtract from the cap spring strength since air pressure acts on both sides of the circle, so if Lee is at high altitude like we are, we can't really count on increased boiling point as much as it would seem by using a higher pressure cap. The cap is held by a combination of Atmospheric pressure and spring pressure, so altitude does de-rate the cap's listed pressure.

I believe newer engines are designed to run at the higher temperatures. Increases the thermal efficiency of the engine. The higher guage is probably appropriate.
