ok, i just bought a 88 xj laredo for parts and have only seen 1 problem that kinda has me stumped

alright, this thing has been sitting for a year or 2 but the engine and most useable parts seem to be in great shape, I even drove the thing home. but it was then that i found the problem, i parked it before pulling it into the carport to be torn down and when i started it to drive it in there it started fine but when i put it into r,d,3,2-1 It dies if i put it into N or P it stays running

now i dont think it could be the nss cause if that was going out it would only start in N or not at all, im not 100% sure but im kinda thinking the torque converter might be locked up and causeing it to die as soon as i put it into gear, what do you think

Ljordon, it sounds like you have no power under a load and there are many things that cause this. If you have a manual read the trouble shooting guide and find the loss of power under load and see if you can find it. Maybe first try stepping up the idle just a little bit and see if that is it.

idle is not the problem, first off its fuel injected and the idle cannot be adjusted and second if the idle were too low which its not (idles about 8-900 in park) i would think it would spit and sputter a bit when putting it in gear,it just simply dies. the torque converter is the only thing i can think of but not for sure

i want to get it figured out before i rip it out so i can have everything fixed by the time i go to swap it into the mj
and my haynes has somehow dissapeared, i think my little brother swiped it

yeah i figured it was fuel injected. you could wedge a lil piece of cardboard in between the stopper plate. when you have a carb motor and the choke is not working right it could do the same thing so who knows if its been sitting what could be in the fuel. could have clogged up some part of the fuel system. wont hurt to try raising the idle just to see.

bingo, would be my first replacement. not that its nearly the same engine but my fs cherokee with the 360 would do the same and it turned out to be a fuel filter

aaarrrrrrrggggghhhhh

I replaced the filter (some nasty crap came out) and i think it may have fixed it but i dont know

also when i picked up the jeep they had ran wires to the solenoid cause it went out, well i went ahead and installed a starter i had sitting around (almost new) and when i start it with the key it starts then dies automatically as soon as i let off and i dont think it is the ignition switch cause i replaced that too because it was doing this before i replaced the switch......

oh and this may answer my own question but the fuel pump is real noisy and wont come on until the key is in the start position, guess if it dont get too much snow tonight like were supposed to then ill try replacing the pump with the one off my 88, i know it works right

ya the fuel rail has pressure but i dont know how much cause i dont have a gauge, if the pump would stay on when the key went back to the start position (right after starting) it would stay running, and that is a good idea to check the fuel relay, duh i forgot al about it.. now if i could only remember which of the four it is

well i got out there today to check some things, i didnt have a book on me to tell which relay it was so i replaced all of them with some spares i had, no luck.... just for sh*ts and giggles i replaced the coil with a spare,No luck

it was too cold out there to mess with the fuel pump but i can almost bet thats it, it dont even turn on when i turn the key to the on position like its supposed to

Get a long piece of wire and hotwire the fuel pump at the plug on the back of the gas tank. If it runs continually, then it's good, next hook up a meter to the fuel pump wires that connect to the plug and turn the key on and check for at least 11 volts. If you have voltage then your problem is most likely not fuel related.

yup, after sitting so long the fuel turns to varnish and i gums up everything. If your dropping the tank clean it out and replace the strainer sock too. the pump might be varnished the filters, injectors its hard to tell. I even found the fuel tank feed tubes clogged up with all kinds of junk so you might want to blow some air thru them to make sure. well good luck.

Try the I.A.C idle air controll.. I heard a few folks with the same rig have a problem with it. Including myself. My symtoms varied from: it would idle fine, then when I touch the gas while in gear it would die. to: Whenever I engaged the tranny (put it in gear) it would die. It the last days before replacing the TPS and I.A.C (both are black modules attached to the throttle body with wire harness plugs) I would roll up to the light, slide it into neutral, then hit the gas and slam into gear learching forward.
