Re: motor locked up

Whatta ya mean locked up? Does it turn over? If not, sounds like a bad starter. I just had to change mine.

Re: motor locked up

If it's the starter just give it a couple of GOOD whacks with your trusty BFH. This method has kept the starter in my '94 working for about 2 years now. The BFH now has a permanent home under the back seat/wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif.

They changed the starters in mid - late '94 and mine has the newer (read $$$) one on it, that's why I'm using the BFH. I think the older ones are under $50 while the newer ones are about 2-3x more

Re: motor locked up

Make sure starter/battery wires are connected. (jiggle them) Also make sure the batt is fully charged. It does sound like a starter though. Jax is right about the testing method. Beat that thang! I had to do it with mine for a few months until I could find the time to put in a new one.

Re: motor locked up

That's right! I forgot about the BFH. Got mine to start that way but had to have a buddy help: one of us beat on the starter while one of us turned the ignition key so I decided to just buy a new starter(didn't want to have to ask somebody for help everytime I start my truck) /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif When I went to PePgirls they told me there were two different starters for the 94 trucks. Mine is the "old" style which is noticeably larger than the "new" style.

Re: motor locked up

no it is not the starter, the starter dont make that cliking sound or anything. and that wouldnt of caused it to cut off like it did. the truk made a funny noise before it happened like a clunking sound coming from the front of the motor like around the belt and stuff but in the motor though. some people i have talked to say it could be the timing chain because if that slipped it would shut off and wont turn over either. so i am hopping thats all it is. the motor is only a year and 9 months with 20k miles so i dont know any reason for it to go bad but i am hoping it is not anything terribly wrong with it.

Re: motor locked up

Did it "pop" or start missing severely, before it quit. That's usually what a timing chain would do if it broke or slipped a notch. The nice thing about a Chevy engine there is enough clearence between the valves & the pistons (Unless a ton of metal was shaved from the heads in the rebuild) that you shouldn't have to worry about the valves crashing into the pistons, if the timing chain broke/slipped a cog.

Re: motor locked up

ok here is what happened it is wierd but i am so thankful about it. the alternator locked up and it locked up so tight that last night the surpentine belt would not budge making it seem locked up. so now instead of who knows how much money for new motor ar repairs i just can buy new alterantor and belt. then i can worry bout my front end problems.

That made me chuckle. I had an alternator go bad while I was driving once. It sounded like the whine of a supercharger. Kinda cool. Then reality struck. It's 2am in the morning, I'm a ways from home and all I can do it watch the battery drain down to nothing. Oh the joys. Glad for you that's the only problem.

alright shorts, so i might not hate you, but i do dislike how you seem to always have cheaper parts thatn me. it bites.
glad to hear it was naught but the elecricity maker. I"d keep your old one if there isn;t a very big core and then rebuild it. they are quite simplistic in fact. naught but an "anti-starter"...kinda. seriously though. new brushed and replace bushings with beaqring...and thats prolyl all you need. cuz you never know when you might need extra parts.

Re: motor locked up

same thing just happened to my 'hoe. You could hear the bearing going south a week before it wouldn't charge at all, and had the same starting symptoms as you. I replaced it w/ a 155A alt. and added a dual battery kit, both from Wrangler. Now I can, at the least, jump myself if it the alt. dies again, but she runs great right now.

Re: motor locked up

i have the dual batt set up from the factory and its com in handy a few times. once left the dome light on while i was at school for the week. jumped myself.
left the orange gumball lights on when i had it parked at the boat launch (my boat is over 8" wide so i use them to warn oncoming traffic) after livin it up on the boat for the weekend, i came back and she was dead....jumped it.
and ocne shorted my amp wire out by mistakle over the school week and i jumped that too. three times i had my ass saved by that extra little battery....cuz sometimes there just isn;t enough room to push start.

Re: motor locked up

went to advance auto ang picked up new alternator and belt today putting it on tomorrow. I stopped it buy the local NAPA to have it checked and it was still working but the bearing was almost seized the guy at NAPA said it was giving his machine a hard time to try to turn it. it kinda sucks to have to buy a new alternator when the bearing is all that is bad. advanced didnt have the lifetime warentee one in stock so i had to settle for 2 years i figgure i can find a way to screw it up in 2 years. i wonder if they think people would ratehr save $20 now and pay $90 later after the warentee runs out. and another thing that i am wondering about is what is the differance in 2 year one and lifetime one why cant they just sell you an additional warentee. it is strange to me.

Re: motor locked up

Ouch! I think I'm just gonna find a way to use the 454 Suburban's 140 amp alternator. Fab some brackets or something. $130 at a parts store last I knew. Second battery and some wiring isn't gonna cost me $520./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif

Re: motor locked up

Hey AJM.. you can pick up the second battery tray at the dealer for maybe 40-60 bucks and a solinoid and some battery cable for probably 30-50. You can have the whole 2nd batt setup for around 100 bucks + the battery. That's how I set mine up and it works great. ASk if you want any details. Brian.

Re: motor locked up

BigBri, cool man, I'll ask you when I do it. I'm thinking dual Optimas though. LOTS of battery power./wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif My current battery is a wee bit on the small size and a hot weather battery, have to see how it does in negative temperatures and snow./wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif The hard part is gonna be getting that Sub alternator to fit.
