I purchased my '86 hardtop for 2 grand. It was completely straight, rust free (AZ car) and strong motor. Since then I have put in about 2 grand more in tires, wheels, header/exhaust, shocks, springs (no SPOA here!), greasable shackles/bushings, t-case gears, bumpers, diamond plate interior panels and skid plates. So I have about 4+ grand into it. Next is new seat covers. For about 4 grand I have a very reliable daily driver and trail vehicle.

And then another convertible to replace the one that burned up.

i'm kinda afraid to say............. i bought mine for cheap........ well half what he wanted for it....... i got it for 300, and here samurais sell cheap anyways, never seen one for more that 2500........
anyways, i kinda put off with the stuff that costs alot....... like i didn't buy a good steering setup yet, made a cheap [censored] z-link, built my own spoa, cj7 ad yj spring swap, linclon locker, baby lobster t-case, custom bumpers.......and well altogether i spent 700 on the lift and body.......
so i'm in 1k........
its gettin and desperatly needs, new tires, gears, toy axles, traction bar, V6, maybe front locker, power steering........and so on........ so it'll be atleast anouther 1500 befor eits done.....

howdy,
i got my 88.5 for trading my uncle a proter cable 19.4 volt cordless drill back in 1999. then i put about $3000 into the engine, $1500 into suspension, $1000 into drivetrain, $500 in the outside, $700 into the inside, $600 into diamond plate and still growing, $800 into armor, $400 into tyres and rims (i got of a buddy), and $150 into bikini top and duster.

I have not put a lot into my Zuk yet, but it is coming. At this point, I have only put a slightly larger tire on and replaced some bushings. I did get a full soft top. Total initial cost for the vehicle including Reg, $2100 The rest is still in the planning stage at this point.

My first real mods will be engine. Headers and exhaust. Approx $300

Next comes suspension and gearing. Springs, shocks, and t-case. Approx $800
Then comes wheels and tires. Approx $600
I cannot see the entire project coming to more than $3000 worth of mod parts, though doing the labor myself will mean that the cost of having the work done is negated. I guess I will have about a 5-6 thousand dollar rig when I am done. Pretty economical I think.

Lets see, I didn't get quite a good deal when i bought mine, If i only knew better. I bought it for 2k. It had 29in. tsl thornbirds in like new shape, nice 8 inch wheels, a weber carb. and a header. as for lift it only has a shackle lift that allows for 30in tires. looks to be about a 2" in lift from the shackles. it also has a "shock" for bumpsteer. overall it is in good shape although I'm going to get rid of the shackles and put something diffrent for the lift. No real maintinance except I broke a timing belt twice and replaced that along with the cover.
Overall I spent about 3,000 on mine with many hours tweaking it to my liking. But it runs very good.
just hate that I bought it for 2k when i've seen others now for sale cheaper.

Couldn't even try to guess what my Hobby has cost me over the years. The way Mud Lite is set up now???????? I put 7K into it 3 years ago, another 2k when I converted it and maybe another 1k in the past few years with add ons such as remote coolers, diff covers, and rocker guards.

If you want to count my time............priceless!!!!!!!!!!!

Traded a 1.6 engine for my truck...
SPOA about $100.00 (4.5 Breeze perches, used Trail Tough Extended Slipyoke, Spacers...etc...)
Traded a broken Sami for my rims and tires (31 BFG knock-offs on Aluminum American Racing Rims),
Got free 2 piece Bestop top from broken Sami,
2 Sets of used Missing Links $225.00
Free RRO rear up front kit and Rear Springs
$250.00 used Spidertrax Panhard bar + Shackles
Traded a tailgate for a Z link
$60.00 for shock towers,
About $250.00 for 4 shocks and new longer brake lines
Bought junked Sami with 1.6 and sold off everything but the 1.6 engine, Calmini Adaptor plate and Thorley header so I recouped my cost for the new engine.
$50.00 for Swift GT seats...
Bought an SJ 410 and parted it out keeping EVERYTHING cool off of it. So I'll be making a GRS 1 (I have the COOL grill, fold down windshield kit..),
Bought a Sidekick for the 4:62 Gears and rear axle sold the rest for a $150.00 profit.
$10.00 CD player from a Police Auction
Special Edition Split rearseat for free
$100.00 for a used locker which I haven't installed yet.

So, I figure all told, I have about $1200.00 give or take $100.00....

Not bad, huh?

Suspension-wise my daily driver is still bacically stock for now. Bought it for 300, spent a few hundred getting it smog legal, and fixing a few things, drivent it every day for over 2 years and well over 30K miles total $ outlay not including gas but does include ever penny otherwise, comes to $2,426.28 and that includes several items waiting to go on the SPOA in planning. Cost to drive including fuel is under 15 cents a mile.

First time I ever kept an accurate log on a vehicle other than the race car, amazing what it can tell you, plus I have a diary of what got replaced when, where and why. Even graphed the mileage and the effect of the winter oxygenators. Knew I got worse mileage in winter, the graph proved it.

87 sami: $500
starter:$100
fuel pump:$50
pony carb:$75
rear yota axle(4.88 and detroit included):$100
front yota axle(4.88 and detroit included):$150
yj springs:$100
and many other odds and ends that i cant remember the prices on i figure i have less than $1200 invested in mine now.....but i also dont have any tires to go with the yota axle/yj spring swap yet. i thinmk i can get mine set up pretty nice for less than $2000. it also helps to be able to do all the work for yourself

Well lets see:
650 for samurai
1200 in motor and other work by Trail tough
650 for a 4.16 case
500 fpr spoa lift
100 for weber
1000 wheels and tires
125 for seats
that brings it to 3225
All over about a 1 year period. Like above said now I have a very capable and reliable trail rig.

You gotta love how cheaply we can build these! Someone could EASILY spend under $4,000.00 and have ONE AWSOME truck! And, I don't mean just a pretty truck either. I mean something that will spank just about everything out there. Try doing that with any other 4x4!

Steel for bumper $60

Subtotal: $4160

6,000 lb winch $580

OK, so that MIGHT buy me a base, unmodified 1980 something Jeep... nah

B-ringed front axles $120
4.56 R&P's front and rear and install kits $520
Dual Webers and Manifold $500
YJ Springs $100
Spare Engine $300
Water Pump $20
Sumo Mounts $80
King Pin Bearings and Seals $120
Swift GTI Steering Wheel $100
New Recarro Seats $50
New glass all around $200
Replace Passenger Window Regulator $20
Miscellaneous: Gas cap, new pedal rubber, radio box, face plate and lighter $100
Miscellaneous Tools for Project: Hoist, Lifting Adapters, Grinders, $200
17 x 10 2" backspaced rims: $500
Haven't got the tires, YJ Kit, SPOA stuff, steering stuff, exhaust stuff, or traction bar yet. Maybe $1500 more so since I have owned my 87 tintop since new, probably around $5,000 to rebuild with everything. If I do new bumpers and a winch, add another grand to that. For all practical purposes it will be a zero mileage vehicle for under $6,000. Oh yeah, better throw in another grand for 4 wheel disk brakes and cardan shafts.

This will take some figuring out loud.

built a pickup bed trailer for my zuk. cost -$250
Made Spoa kit -$40
Purchase baha claws for -$700
Bart Wheels -$250
D/t shocks, breeze crossover&shackles,
shock mounts,drop pitman arm -700
Body lift -$80
Guages -$80
Cv rear shaft -$175
longer front shaft -$50
Tranny to t case shaft -$75
Misc. parts for toyota swap etc. -$250
Total in zuk... $2650

However,

Sold engine/ tranny out of same zuke +$300
traded for chevy blazer with new 33's
Then sold blazer for +500
then sold 33's for +300
Sold race car Minus engine/ tranny $
Used this engine in zuk. +$2100

that comes to $3200.

Of course I had spent money on the race car, but I quit racing when I decided to do the zuk, so all in all its paid for itsself so far....and Im in the plus by $550. But pretty soon I will be spending $$$ again LOL.

Anyone have a grs I or II for sale??
