the reaon why i brought this up is because lately i have been seeing alot of tjs in accidents! rollovers or whatevers and they say both air bags are good. It was just a thought cause the tjs are from 4500 to 7500 buck depending on the condition. If you could get a decent amount of money for the set of air bags you could bring down the cost of the jeep and have a excellent starting point? depending on how strong the axles in the the tjs are? All you would need now is a lift (tjs are one of the more expensive lifts) gears, and of course a new tub. will a yj work? I thought i saw a jeep in a magazine that was yellow that was a tj with a yj body! and i saw it in 2 diffrent magazines the 2nd time i saw it the body was trashed (yj body that is)
well what do u think?

I saw something on tv a while back that replacement air bags are so expensive that people are stealing them off of steering wheels and selling them - for like $200 each. /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif Don't know if they're still that much, it was a while back...

In my neck of the woods the average would be$600-$800 for a pair.
Just depends who's selling them. Bags are big money unless their early chryslers(dime a dozen). Call local yards around you looking for a pair for prices.......I bet you might have a hard time locating some. Price jumps up with "supply and demand".

There are very strict federal guidelines on the use/reuse of airbags. It would be difficult to resale these to a reputable shop. You might be able to sell them to a shade tree outfit or individual. I do not think that it would be worth the effort/liability. Many cars are "totalled" by insurance companies nowadays due to the high cost of replacing the airbags, sensors, crush panels, seatbelts (yes, they too are required to be changed), etc.

My uncle mentioned something to me about this and it's kinda scary that people are stealing airbags out of vehicles, not for the safety feature of them, but for something IN them. Yes, airbags are set off, by a little bit of C-4, and for those of you that haven't seen a lot of action movies, that's an explosives...sure there's only a little bit in airbags, but if you get enough of them, that's a rather dangerous scenario. I disconnected my airbags shortly after getting my TJ, but I certainly don't want to sell them, and have somebody blow up some kid in a school. just my .02....

What sensors are you talking about? are they hooked up to the motor so the motor will not start of what? I have one problem that i have never thought of regerdless if i bought a totaled tj with/with out a salvage tittle in my are when you go to register a vehicle you for book value of the jeep and not the condition! and lets just say i registered my jeep almost five years ago for a 84 it was valued at 3000 and some changed and i regestered my 83 this summer and it was a little more than 3000 and that was for a one year older jeep and five years latter! this equalled out to be in both cases the sales tax was a bit over 160 bucks! so i can imagine what a tj sales tax would be! as far as me doing it now i would have to think if i put a older style tub (YJ) and a cj nose on it and regester it as a cj with all the pollution controls from a 97 or newer might be diffucult to explain that one to the guy who is giving me the stickers! It is still good idea! Maybe i would do it for a less hardcore jeep and more of a street driven jeep. my friends jeep handles awesome on the Road!!
and on the trail but it is his daily driver so he does not go through very deep mud and water as he f* up his tranny before! But other than that he has had no problems!

84C-J-7, I know every state is different as far as taxes and value. Some places if you get the price you paid noterized you will only have to pay taxes on that amount if it is less then blue book. Others will take your word on value if it is older then a certain year, but that would be pre-TJ age.

I know the surrounding states and a over five years ago You could get a way with it. Since than it has changed! it is in the computer and that is that u pay what book value is and thats that! Altough on Motorcyles they do not have a clue I have been able to buy a bike for less than that model goes for, register it, pay for the tittle to be in my name 50 bucks ride the bike for a while and make a small profit and buy another bike! the sales tax is not free but i have bought a bike for 6 grand and told them i paid 2000 i would have told them less but i did not want to get to greedy and blow a good thing! I still had to pay 100 bucks plus all the other crap! but i still saved 200 bucks from what i payed for it and if they did go buu "book value" on these bikes i would not be able to regester them and sell them when i wanted to with out loosing money on them!

The sensors that I spoke of in my early post are those that are use to tell the airbags when to deploy (aka "air bag sensors"). Another interesting note... there are companies now that recycle the parts of used airbags. Why? The sensor "balls" (many air bag sensors use a ball located on a U-shaped ramp with contacts on either end - many systems are now switching to "clock spring" sensors) are gold plated and the wire connectors within the air bag system are gold plated. Gold, of course, is one of the best conductors known to man. Now, before you rush out and starting melting down air bag parts, remember that I said plated - and it is a very, very, very, light plating.

Many airbags use Sodium Azide as their propellant. This is basically a "solid" rocket fuel. When it "detonates" it creates a large volume of nitrogen gas which is used to inflate the airbag.
