How good are X-90\'s?

Just how good do this little buggers perform on and off road? When I had parked my Sidekick beside one, the X-90 looked lower and shorter. Can these be lifted easily? What about performance modifications, I think I'm going to start hunting for a good deal on one, and then get a header and intake for it, because I need enough power for trailering, I want to pull two snowmobiles, so around 12-1400 lbs. What do you guys think about them?

They drivetrains and chassis are exactly the same as the Kick, anything a kick can do an X can do!

Re: How good are X-90\'s?

Well, not quite - they come with smaller tires, and smaller wheel wells. I don't think they're THAT much similar to the Sidekicks!

Hey ZUK88, where'd you take that picture? That X-90 has Colorado plates! Gnarly tires, too!

I don't know who owns the Purple X-90 but I've seen it a few times. I live in Longmont, Colorado & I've seen it in Longmont & Boulder. Looks cool, seems kind of slow, maybe needs to be regeared still. Very clean little machine.

Re: How good are X-90\'s?

I am sure they are geared higher than the Kicks...the stocker tires are a lot smaller.
The purple X90 is kool,I'll bet they rub at full lock and/or articulation though...pretty tight in there.
I have looked at the X-90 and thought about jacking one...I would probally cut out the wells to the max and fit some kind of flares on there...then with the Calmini 3+3 kit and some 33s it would rock and look kool to boot!
They are still a little expensive for my tastes still.

Re: How good are X-90\'s?

It is owned by a guy on the X-90 bulletin board. It runs a Calmini 3" suspension for a Sidekick (Yes, they are exactly the same under the body work). He trimmed his fenders to get the 30x12.5" MTs under it. X90s are really just sidekicks with different sheet metal so pretty much anything that will fit on a Kick will work on the X. I am planning on adding either the Calmini 2" or the OME lift to mine eventually.

Re: How good are X-90\'s?

Lets see.. they were all 16V motors and I think they all have 4.62 gears no matter if it's a stick or an auto same as kick autos. The tires aren't that much smaller 195/65's IIRC. Few other little things but it's pretty much just a differnet body.

Those tires look huge on there, I can't believe they're only 30's after seeing it on the street, they appear bigger. I saw it parked on a snow bank in a parking lot a couple weeks ago, didn't seem to flex much, tires weren't coming close to the wells. It is definitely an eye catcher!

Re: How good are X-90\'s?

He has it set up with front and rear antisway bars for the street to keep it from flexing too much. He was in the process of having a local shop custom build him some flares to cover the wheel wells.

BTW, I have an install article for a Sidekick steering stabilizer and skid plate onto an X on my site. Just click the pic below.

Re: How good are X-90\'s?

Two differences:

X-90 Tracker

5th gear: 0.795 0.86
Diffs: 4.625 5.12

The factory tires are 24", where the factory tires on a Track/Kick are 27", so the speedo is geared differently.

Obviously, the suspension is the same, cause the Calmini 3" lift works, I wonder if the 3" body lift will work, too - it should. You oughta be able to get it up to 31" tires with that, but you better look at the 5.83 R & P set for it.

The other big difference is that it only weighs 1400 pounds! Holy cow, it oughtta SCREAM with the stock 1.6 16 valve engine!

Re: How good are X-90\'s?

I looked at the X-90 specs & it shows the curb weight at 2300-2500 #'s, not 1400. It's a little heavier than the Samurai but has the 1.6 engine. How many years were these produced?

didn't know about he 5th gear, interesting tidbit, but Auto kicks and trackers have the 4.62's also.

Re: How good are X-90\'s?

That purple one looks deadly! Thats exactly how I'd like to have mine look! Once I sell my 'kick I think I'll start hunting for one. To run a 30" tire like that, if a person were to swap out the diffs for 5.12 gears that are in a 'kick that would probably really help the performance, right? Because I want to raise it up a little, but I still need some power, because I want to pull two snowmobiles. What were those 16V engines rated at ? 95 HP right?

Re: How good are X-90\'s?

The X-90 is identical to the Sidekick/Tracker of the same years, with the exception of the body and the tires and wheels.

The engine, transmissions, transfer cases, and axle gears are the same. The automatic tranny equipped X-90's (like the Trackers and Sidekicks) use 4.62 axle gears, while the manual tranny X-90's use the same 5.12 axle gears used in the Trackers and Sidekicks. Yes, the gearing is shorter, and that's how it achieves the more sprightly performance compared to the Sidekick/Tracker. It also weighs a little bit less. They're every bit as good as a Sidekick or Tracker off-road with comparable tires. Think of it as a Sidekick/Tracker with a different body and smaller tires bolted onto the chassis.

My sister owns an X-90 that I have helped her modify a little bit. Basically, she wanted to keep it her daily driver, but to enhance its off-road abilities. We installed the Old Man Emu springs and upgraded to 225/70-15 all-terrain tires. We could've fit bigger tires if Suzuki hadn't chosen to make the wheelwells so much smaller than the ones on the Tracker/Sidekick. But she still has sufficient ground clearance for what she does with it, traction is significantly improved, and highway performance and ride comfort have actually improved versus stock. You can check out my review of the suspension kit here: http://www.off-road.com/suzuki/reviews/rromex90.htm The article will be updated with more pictures the next time we update the Suzuki section.

Re: X-90\'s?

How much does a header and cold air intake help on these? I didn't mod my 89 'Kick at all, but I'm planning on modding this X-90 pretty good.
